It all concerns me. But being realistic I don’t live in SE Asia and I have no ability to influence anything happening up there.
But I do live in NZ so realistically this is the obvious place to focus my immediate concerns and efforts.
Like calling out an event that I think belongs in a previous era.

From your link: Governed by ethical fishing practices, the contest prides itself on sustainability, with one of the main categories being “tag and release”. What was caught is identified and earmarked for scientific research before being released back into the wild.Kubota don't just make diggers. They make industrial diesel engines, one of which is in the form of a Beta in my boat. They are also the base engine for Nanni's. Anyway, I was going to get into blatant stereo typing and say the type of people that buy diggers wouldn't see kill and weigh as a problem. But, I think those view changing. Legasea is doing a lot of work around that, and there is a growing awareness of stewardship for the sea. Many more competitions are going to measure and release, especially for the likes of snapper, kings, kahawai etc. The blokes at aggrolife sell kubota kit and would’ve been integral in setting up sponsorship and the tournament I would imagine . I’ve got no beef with kubota corp , they make good shit .

Oh good golly, don't some people like playing with stones while inside glass houses. I've just spent 5hr on a Kubota restoring a wetland, the second one the machine has done. I wonder if I could have done that using a Rivertimo or other non-recyclable craft made of petroleum products that are good for the plant in the way they ....ah....err....um.... I'll have to get back to you on that..... Just sayin

Current leader for the $350k prize is a 256.5kg blue marlin.
Yellowfin tuna 41.12kg for $10k prize. Kingfish 14.56kg for $10k prize.
My understanding is anything that looks smaller than that is just tagged and released now.
The Waiheke Matters local paper has done a SM post saying this competition is in the Hauraki Gulf. And it is solely kill and weigh comp. Not sure if the Whitty locals identify as being in the Hauraki Gulf. Anyway, apparently, now the bar has been set, the vast majority of fish are being tagged and released. Sounds like they have a complex points system for tagging fish.

Biggest Tuna now a big eye Tuna at 68.2kg. The club won't weigh any bill fish at any time under 90kg. As for the Waiheke paper, what a load of shit. They are fishing from well outside of barrier as far south as Mayor Island. Hardly the gulf.

Spoke to my mate last night as I thought he would be doing it. Nah fuck that being in amongst 420 boats, majority are primidoners ,wouldn't no a billfish from stripey to a black

Good on them. They will be having a blast and I bet no meat will be wasted.
It would be interesting to compare the biomass caught during the comp to the biomass harvested by commercial fisheries and sent overseas during the same period.
And at least the rec guys will be selectively harvesting.

You are right sabre. Ther would be more fish taken in the Hauraki gulf on a fine weekend than what will be kept in this comp. Bottom fishing competitions are doing more harm to fish stokes the Game fishing.

Correct on waste by reccs. We at Kaiaua mussel farm and a number of legal size struggling on the surface going past us,not the trophy fish??Managed to net a couple ,When we came back to kawakawa bay, pulled boat out and stopped by fisheries ,no problem with size, lady wanted to count,no issue there. But was a issue for 2 others who were unhitching their boats as tow truck on way.The 2 werent your usual suspects.Claiming the rules should be displayed at ramp and not up to them to find out the rules. They are displayed at both ramps.

I hate our patch of water being lumped in with the gulf as much as having to write Waikato as our region.

Kubota is only 1 of 79, possibly more? I'd argue there are other names there equally and/or far more planarity nasty than Kubota. Also far more there we mere mortals can actually influence into tiding their shit up today. Is this discussion one of those based on cherry picking, as far too many are these days, or one of genuine concern for the planet. To date I'm struggling to see it as the later. While here, after chatting with mates/team all week long about Akl Super Shitty traffic congestion, I'd like to thank our resident accounting practice for not having offices in the CBD as there is absolutely NO need for many many companies to be in the CBD. If they moved further out the level of congestion can only reduce. (if you have moved recently I take it all back and will kick you in the knuts for doing so )

Maybe 3 or 4yrs industry completely destroyed the 90 mile beach fishing comp.went through the day before and trawled the entire length of beach.
