A large container ship has hit the pier of a 3 km long bridge in Baltimore, causing the bridge to collapse into the water. Sounds like a major clusterfuck. Traffic was on the bridge. Officials are calling it a developing mass casualty event. It's currently dark / at night, so hard for them to see what is going on. Wonder if it was an accident or some sort of bad actor thing. The Russians are pissed off at the moment, and Merica has no shortage of people it's pissed off that would have a go at something like this. I'd say whoever was on the bridge is in a world of shit, even if the ship had lost all power / catastrophic mechanical failure. www.newshub.co.nz/home/world/2024/03/baltimore-s-key-bridge-collapses-after-ship-collision.html

Wow, should watch the video in the above link. Fairly high res. Shows the ship, which looks like it's not moving cause it's facing the camera. A puff of dust / shattering concrete around the bridge pier, then.... the whole bridge crumbles like a child's toy. It looks similar to the Auckland Harbour Bridge, but much longer.
Very concerningly, you can see headlights of vehicles on the bridge.

Wonder why they didn't dump the anchor?
Or maybe they did and it didn't hold??

Wonder why they didn't dump the anchor? Or maybe they did and it didn't hold?? They did. Seen it in the daylight photos. Those ships take a bit of stopping. There is a timelapse video on the web (saw it on a FB group so can't post the link) showing the ship had two full power outages. All the lights went out - as in dark ship, they came back on, huge cloud of smoke out of the funnels, then a second dark ship. I can't tell how long all that took from the timelapse video, it looked quick. Apparently they had enough time to issue a mayday, and the transport authority closed the bridge to traffic(?!?) saving a number of lives. There was a roading crew repairing potholes that went into the water. So, I don't understand how they had time to declare a mayday, for a completely separate organisation to stop traffic going onto the bridge, drop anchors and still hit the thing at the worst possible spot. When it first lost power it was heading straight for the main channel. It was after one of the power outages it veered off toward the pier. Wonder if that was an anchor dragging the bow around or something?

Roger, thanks. I've not watched any of the footage.
Sounds like every worst case scenario aligned perfectly.

Interesting post in BFD General Debate, from someone who sounds like he is a pilot
The number of times I arrive on a ships bridge to conduct an outward pilotage and the Bridge is not set up is now 90 times in a 100. Radars off, Bridge Controls not tested, Nav lights not on, Massive Gyro errors despite being alongside a wharf. It's so disappointing, thus is my profession and it's being dumbed down and down. I once arrived on the bridge to come into Bluff and the radar was so badly tuned it wasn't giving a return from The Bluff 1 mile away!! How they managed to find NZ was beyond me!

far fetched, but anything is possible in these crazy times The only issue being the boat had a local pilot on it, and that missive says they didn't. Missed a basic fact. Sure, the concept that this was done by a bad actor is obvious. Even I said that when I first heard about it, before knowing this was a strategic bridge and blocks access to a major port, let alone freight movement over the bridge. And noting that in Merica, people have sought fit to hijack aeroplanes and fly them into tall buildings. We know the Hooties (spelling) and most of Somalia are very good at getting onto large ships, taking them over and driving off with them. Who would not want to come to Merica, hijack a large ship and run it into something massive and critical. The scope of terror attacks using large ships is massive. Probably always was, but now it's been demonstrated what you can do with one, a lot of people will be thinking about it. I'll bet a good bottle of whisky the Federal Security agencies are looking at this very closely. Probably shitting themselves.

Early investigations already show that the ship had a history of electrical problems and whilst on the dock - just before departing - the engineers had been struggling to solve the problem of multiple systems tripping out.
Its sounds like the only bad actor was the person who said the ship was safe to operate.
If you wanted to destroy a bridge there are easier ways than trying to arrange such a complex plot.
Much easier just to arrange a swarm of explosive carrying drones.
The other missing ingredient is someone proudly claiming responsibility. They are normally v quick to tell the world it was their cunning plan which achieved said destructive act. Silence here.

Well Obama did make the movie last year with the ship taking out the bridge, just coincidence though. Like how he went visiting high ups just before terror attack on Moscow.
