Yet another Euro yacht (this time Arcona 46) has its rudder stock fail and sinks
These builders are all driven by bean counters looking to save the last cent. Have no idea how they satisfy the required ISO standards, isn't self certification great!

Its hard to tell from the video but surely that wasn't aluminium - no one would be that negligent (would they?)

Yep that’s why it looks like it’s been chewed by a rat where it’s been bashing on the bearing. Below Taken from Arcona website .
Rudder The rudder is made of glass fibre with multiaxial roving, filled with polyurethane foam; rudder stock of solid water-resistant aluminium laminated into the rudder. Self-aligning roller bearings to minimise friction; the rudder is also supported axially by ball bearings.
Steering Arcona 460 is fitted with cable steering for optimal responsiveness and feel. Steering gear is mounted in an integrated steering pedestal, rudder quadrant mounted on rudder stock. Emergency tiller mount on top of rudder stock. Leather-covered stainless steel wheel has a diameter of 1.8 m and is recessed in a well to provide proper height and steering comfort. Steering pedestal has room for chartplotter and Raymarine ST290 system and is equipped with a sturdy stainless steel pedestal guard.

Interesting article on rudder shafts. I personally think S/S is still the go to material. Take a 300mm long ali 6mm rod,can break in 2 or 3 bends ,now do the same with ss heats up brefore breaking,Im no engineer but seems logical to to use ss or bronze. Interesting reading Hanse forum on rudder stock(Ali) most have had problems noah-marineservices.com/marine-ship-rudder-stock/

I saw the rudder cut open for a Catana 43 cat on the weekend, looks like a toy - small aluminium tube, maybe 40mm and a few bits of 12mm rod for cross members.
