It's a broken system. In today's cost of living crisis where people are living paycheck to paycheck it can send families to the wall. A panel of your peers made up by people who aren't smart enough to write a letter to get out of jury service... Yep... If your employer doesn't offer a top up, and you cannot afford to go without your paycheck and use your savings, write a letter explaining the financial hard ship you will suffer and you will be excused. Got off on 3 previous occasions. Roll on 65 and can then say NO.

If you are genuinely in the pooh then fair enough but don't use that as an excuse just to be a slack lazy fucker because if enough slack lazy fuckers are so ALL society will lose and it will lose massively.
As for everyone but Ducky being a thicky that's fine, everyone is on an equal footing.

It was a eye opener as too who attended, from great unwashed to Mr Pensioner in suit and tie, different nationalities mix, though the barrel roll produced a lot of asaian/indian mix. Dont think its rigged as we were right next to the lady spinning the barrel and retrieving names.

Sorry I didn't make that clear. The renumeration system is broken. It's too easy for smart good earners to get off. So the selection pool ends up being those who's employer pays them, which is few, or those that are too dumb to write a letter to get off.

So the selection pool ends up being those who's employer pays them, which is few, or those that are too dumb to write a letter to get off. I got called up about 15 years ago, and got off because we had a consultant going to 'staya that coincided with the jury service. I think it's getting harder and harder to get off (at least that was my impression). I then got called again in my current job (7 years ago?) and because it's a relatively big employer just did it. Was quite interesting. Some rooster threatened his partner with a machete, she went to the cops. The crown lawyer stood up in court and laid out the events on the evidence she had give the cops at the time. Then started asking her some questions. She stood there and pretty much denied it every happened. The prosecuting lawyer stood there, rubbed his chin (obviously going wtf!) and continued on as best he could when his witness had clearly done a crash jybe at the 11th hour. Jury still had to make a decision but even the judge said you basically can't convict the wife beater of beating his wife when his 'wife' denies it. So he walked away. Almost zero doubt they were living together again. Point being, I don't think you can just write a letter to get off nowadays. Hopefully the machete didn't get bought out in anger again.

Yes some would definitely find the compensation inadequate for their specific needs. I agree it needs to be looked at.
If any of my team gets called up I will not write them a letter, I insist they go and the company will top the compensation to their usual pay. All 6 on my Board are employers and do the same, I think you'll find more and more are.
My Jurys have included a very representative bunch of society with hims, hers, pimplys, wrinklies, employed, employers, NZ born, not NZ born and even a new mum. I do not regard even one as should not have been there. I have zero issue with the make up of the various personalities and their thought processes as that's exactly what they should be, a representative mix of society.
The dumbarses, the thickos, the verging on retarded are those who think dodging Jury service is doing themselves and their family a favour. They have not thought it through and are being 100% selfish. We're very fast losing the ability to have a meaningful say on our existences, losing this would be a MASSIVE game changer, especially at a time when the pollies are bring in more and more nana rules. A Jury made up of us can temper the silly/dangerous/scary/oppressive rules, professional Jurors will not.
Your Honour, on or about June 22 2024, Ducky made a hate comment on a blog of little significance. He called society 'Dumb' and that contravenes Law 72.8 Sub 6.12 Clause 2a 'They shall not use hate speech'. The prosecution demands 6 months jail time and a 25K restoration payment.
A Jury of us - The law is dangerous, this case is not the intention of the law, we do not want it being the intention of the law as it is being applied in a petty and vindictively - Not Guilty.
A professional paid Jury - The law is nasty and we don't like it but it is the law - GUILTY, hang the fucker.
