What fast this is. My son/wife and I have received letters from the Ministry of Justice to attend service on the 17th June. Hmm now let me see,we all live at the same address and will be traveling together. So guess not much chance of us serving on a Jury.
So do we ring up individually or just show up and wait to be sent home? first time for all of us.

Not sure, but if you go, take a book or something to keep yourself amused.
The 'choosing' part will do your head in with how slow it moves, or more to the point, how it doesn't even move!
I ended up on one a few years back, it was actually quite interesting.
Thankfully district court and a few days of domestic violence which which was only mildly disturbing.
As apposed to high court which could have been weeks and mostly likely very disturbing.

Have been called up 3 times. First two times drafted a letter outlining work commitments and was excused. Third time not so lucky. Turned up in a suit. One look at me and I was told not required, see you again some time. Most of those selected looked like bigger crims than those on trial. Suppose that is being judged by your peers.

But how can they pick 3 members of the same household to attend to the same court, not much chance that 3 of us could appear for tha same trial.

they aren't asking you to sit on the same trial they're asking how many of your household can turn up for jury duty if all 3 can, great i presume they have more than 1 trial scheduled for that week/weeks

Hmm now let me see,we all live at the same address and will be traveling together. So guess not much chance of us serving on a Jury. So do we ring up individually or just show up and wait to be sent home? first time for all of us. Can all go in together but be prepared to leave individually. One or more may get on a case but one or more may not and you'll never know until it happens, it is as random as a random thing. So you all may notl eave at the same time.
I got the call and went. Got selected for a case and the Jury formans seat. Death by boy racer. Guilty on 3 of the 4 charges. Went for a week but was very interesting and the time flew by.
Got the call a second time and not selected on Monday but had to come back, on the Wednesday morning 5 minutes before heading there they pulled the pin on all cases due to covid. We did think it was strange we were all locked in a smallish room while the country was shutting down, they remembered us eventually.
If you get the call DO IT!!! If you don't they will get 'professional juryors' in and the people will lose their justice system. Professional Juryers will become hardened to icky fast, work to the letter of the law and will not be representative of the people. One example is the case up north where the 2 yobs were stealing shit and the farmer fired to scare but nailed one of them. The will of the people i.e. the Jury, decided his actions were justified, as did the second defendant coincidently, so the farmer did not get convicted. Professional Jourors would have had the dude in jail for life.

Attended today at 9.0am Auckland high court, lady rotated the barrel and called 50 names who were then escorted upstairs, coincidence that those called were indian/polynesian names?while about 80 of us europeans sat in the room till 38 others returned and we were dismissed for the day but told to check web site tonight and we will be back 9.00am wednesday.
There has to be a simpler way of chosing surely. Maybe electronic bar code?? go left or go right,go right upstairs for selection while those left free to go? Those upstairs get whittled down to 12 seems simple to me.Gee what to do with my $31 less tax??
Some jurors who turned up were meant to go to the AK district court and 2 or3 went too AK court who should of been at high court.Cant follow simple instructions what hope is there of a fair trial?

$31 per 1/2 day or $40 full day,why is not not paid at minimum wage rate.Surely this would entice people a little to attend.
Or select 100 people and they yes to attendance then do a computor draw like lotto as to only need 40 to physically attend to be whittled down to 12 and have 10 on standby incase some of the 12 get ill.
Must cost the country thousands to hold jury cases,my employer had to get a temp in for 3 days at the cost $50ph agency fee who pay the temp $35ph

Many countries work the same way.
It’s generally thought of as doing the right thing (your civic duty) to support a fair justice system.
In other words you get paid your expenses plus some pocket money but it’s your employer who carries the rest of the cost eg temp staff.
If the court system paid jury members more money guess where that would come from? Your employer (via extra taxes). It would just be shuffling the same money around.

It's a broken system. In today's cost of living crisis where people are living paycheck to paycheck it can send families to the wall.
A panel of your peers made up by people who aren't smart enough to write a letter to get out of jury service... Yep...
If your employer doesn't offer a top up, and you cannot afford to go without your paycheck and use your savings, write a letter explaining the financial hard ship you will suffer and you will be excused.
