I have a mate that wants to give away the lease on a 12m berth at Hobsonville.
How often do you hear about a "free' marina berth? I am rather bemused at how the opex is $9,100 / yr, as in $760/month. But that is cause I park on pile moorings in a river and can't walk to my boat. I can see these costs completely killing boating. And resale values for our boats. Caravaning has to be cheaper?
"Hi my circumstances have changed and I have at 12m berth at Hobsonville marina and want to give the lease away for free. Opex will need to be paid for the coming year of around $9100. The lease is until 2035. Good spot for live aboard."

Herberts been banging up the Opex brutal in all 3 marinas. I think he's trying to gather the many millions it will cost to clean up Bayswater before they start building.
The berthage cost is the second to biggest reason why I only have one boat floating. The biggest being a time shortage for just a little bit longer.

I have a mate that wants to give away the lease on a 12m berth at Hobsonville. I used to have a berth at Westpark, 14m, and was one of the founders of the Berth Owners Association there, along with Bad Kitty and 2 others. When the licenses were rolled over in 2005 I walked away from my berth (leaving $20k behind) as did about 100 other berth owners. Even way back then we could see we were on a hiding to nothing.

A local dockyard just opened a very small single dock Marina of about 15 fingers . Back in Jan when our boat was hauled there I asked the manager what they were going to charge for a berth . He said 210k freehold . I immediately got some paper work and shot home to convince the wife we needed one . In the small print it clearly stated that it was leasehold for 20 years , the paper work went in the bin .

all marinas, other than those owned by an individual, are based upon a "licence to occupy". Durations are typically 35 yrs from licence activation depending upon terms of Resource Consent and associated Sea bed licence, notable exceptions being HMB (in perpetuity) and Gulf Harb (88yrs). I know a lawyer who had an interest in buying a berth Licence at the new Whangarei Okara Marina, until he read the terms, said the terms were so biased no way would he consider them. Then I have another friend who did buy one, against the advice of his lawyer!

How does the doves bay marina berth ownership model work ? Doves Bay is the same as HMB, Sandspit and Sulphur Pt (Tauranga) to name a few, incorporated society controls the marina with the berth holders being the society members, but they still only have a licence to occupy, they don't "own" the berth outright.

Just like a Tesla.
No one buys a Tesla, they only buy the right to use one.

Just like a Tesla.
No one buys a Tesla, they only buy the right to use one. And you can only get white ones

I don’t think that’s true. If you buy (not lease) then yes you own it. But if you buy optional extras that’s a grey area because Tesla did (or maybe still do) reserve right to switch off those extras when you sell it. 😳 Basically if you buy one of those sole-sapping contraptions you are signing up for a totally different motoring experience all round. You can keep it. And I’ll keep my 5.0L V8. 😊

I'm told you do own the car, the hardware, but you don't own the software. Just like the computor/phone your reading this on, the hardware is yours but none of the software is. So effectively Elon can kill your hardware by fiddling with his software. I doubt he would unless you are management at Disney. I'm keeping my 0.95L V2 and it's mates.
Any takers on the berth?

There appears to be a reasonable number of questions / enquiries. Interestingly the main selling point is that live-aboards are allowed at Hobsonville.
