Here is an interesting story. Newshub show social media footage of a group on a launch fishing in a bay on the Poor Knights, well inside the marine reserve, that has been in place since 1998. The video footage on the Newshub link is unambiguous. And, even though faces are blurred, there are many identifying features of the people but especially the boat. Newshub describes the person as a Northland hunting and fishing Instagrammer with 33,000 followers - that is a very high number for NZ. A quick google, and many comments on Newshubs FB page link you to Steff the Maori on instagram. A quick look at photos of his boat show that it is the one and the same that was fishing in the Poor Knights. The boat has just had a 4 month refit. While it is an older displacement launch, it has distinctive Maori motifs along the side and a very large Maori carving at the prow - very distinctive. DoC and MPI have confirmed they have received complaints. I wonder if any effective legal action would be taken. This whole thing seems jaw dropping. Steph the Maori is followed by several high profile NZ fishing names including Matt Watson, Ollie Craig etc. Stefan Apiata stefthemaori_ Instagram pho....html (1.45 MB) www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2024/05/outrage-as-social-media-posts-reveal-alleged-illegal-fishing-spree-in-protected-marine-reserve.htmlwww.instagram.com/stefthemaori_/

Sickening and there will be no prosecution or penalties. Cant upset Iwi. Knew I would find a fucking out clause so that it may make it legal for Iwi to fish. No date but Nick Smith was minister. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/dont-be-tempted-to-fish-iwi-told/XPVEUT3R5MI4TQNKHLVHXNCO5I/After a High Court hearing this month, Justice Smellie said in a reserved decision that Dr Smith's decision had been unlawful "to the extent [and in no other respect] that it related to customary Maori fishing interests" and directed the minister to review that. Mr Peters said Ngatiwai nonetheless believed it had existing customary fishing rights in the reserve, and would internally debate what they meant, which "is not necessarily something from the 1840s." He said the iwi members had meanwhile been advised not to attempt to exercise those rights by fishing in the reserve.

If they want to row out there in a waka built by hand from wood, flax and stone, and fish with bone hooks and flax string I got no problem.
Culturally appropriating diesel powered launches and sonar technology to fish in a New Zealand reserve, fuck off.

He's put up a bullshit apology. Says a guy on the boat didn't read the GPS properly, thought the lighthouse circle was the marine reserve, not the whole thing. Then goes on to name the guy that told the authorities, threatens him saying it is now 'personal'. Calls the people that publicisied his wrong doings 'vultures' - referring to journo's, whilst they are doing us a public service. Then has a bit of a cry cause he just built up his brand enough to make a living.
Says he spoke to a lawyer, but def not a PR person, threatening the informant and lashing out at the journos.
Really hope they take his boat, set an example. How can you be a skipper if you can't read a chartplotter to see the whole place is a marine reserve, let alone live in Northland for fuck knows how long and reckon that excuse will stick?

I am VERY concerned about him naming the person that reported him to the authorities, and saying it is 'personal' that that person did that...

To a point where in the last 3 years i can count on one hand the amount of times i have fished inshore here. To me, this is a start to the recovery. i still think that there should be regulations in place over snapper spawning within the bay. But, as i say this is a start. i know that there are alot of people affected by this and there were lots when the Goat Island and poor Knights were introduced. In my opinion these places have benefited in surrounding areas.
