A question I haven't been able to answer with google or phoning a couple of likely suppliers.
The material that batten pockets are made out of sails, what is it called and where can I get some from?
UK sail fabric suppliers refer to it as 'Polyester slit tape'. It is the dacron material, generally maybe 100mm wide (can be anything from 50mm to 200mm ish) and is used to fold over the edges of the lough, leach and foot of a sail, and doubled up and then sewing onto the sail to make a batten pocket.
I'm working on a project to make a fancy boom tent (to keep the sun off in summer and the rain off wether it be summer or winter) and want to put in some batten pockets for the fibreglass rod I've got.

I guess I could, but I'm just bemused I can't find it locally. I can get Sunbrella / Planasol at wholesale rates locally, and all the other bits and pieces like domes and zips etc, the proper thread, correct sized needles to match the thread etc, but can't find polyester slit tape. The sailcloth supplier doesn't have it, spoke to another distributor of all things marine and fabric - they've never heard of it. Was recommended a place called Webbing and Tape, who don't have it.... Google is coming up with zero locally. I've tried a combination of names etc. Pondering making some myself (cutting something else down) but is a whole lot of extra work and reduced quality for the same outcome. The only ideas I've got left is ask a sailmaker on Monday, or just order a roll from the US of A. Freight will probably be more than the roll. Sailright might have a presence on Amazon which could be worth a go I guess.

PS - I do try to actively avoid the Sailrite website, otherwise I'll buy one of their top shelf sewing machines and the missus will kick me out for buying more toys / boat related spending... I could spend hours and hours on there watching video tutorials and dreaming up new and exciting boat projects...

Try these guys then, probably have what you are after www.wwiggins.co.nz/best if you can use someone's account to buy what you want (maybe Bill/Vorpal Blade?) as they are pretty expensive if you are paying retail

Many sailmakers here make their own.
Try QCD or if no joy try Tony Sail Specialities. I know he makes it often and for other sailmakers.

Just back in NZ but next time I’m in US / UK / Europe I could pick something up.
Most likely sometime in July / Aug possibly sooner.
