Number 2 boy has decided to go for his full car licence due to the fact his restricted expires in Dec 2025. Wow no bookings in Auckland/Hamilton/Tauranga until May 2025
Is this due to paying a one off fee and able to re sit as many times until you pass? No wonder a lot of young people cant find work when you need a full licence to able to drive after 10.00pm or before 5.00am

I have completely spat the dummy on trying to use VTNZ for my WOF"s. Often when I was hanging around for a WOF the driver testing process looked like a complete shambles. Only thing I would think of is putting his name down for a wait list, as in a cancellation of someone else's booking. Works well for me to get in to see medical professionals when there is long waits.

But have heard reports can take up to 12 months to sit a licence unless you want a motorbike licence that can be done today no issues.

Went to VTNZ to book test and NO,must be done online. Got a booking for him. New Plymouth at 4.00 30 August. How crazy. You can multiple book so if fail Monday you book the whole month till you pass and then cancel other bookings. Another Labour Govt cock up by paying a one off fee and you can retry and try again till pass for NO additional fees.

I am sure this discussion about driver's licences brings back memories of the "old" days. The story I like is of the lad in a rural town who presented himself at the cops for testing at 9.00am on the day of his 15th birthday, having driven there alone - he passed . I waited a long time, think I was about 15 yrs 6 mths when I got mine, even though had been driving quite some time. I got my HT licence when I was working at Argyle Diamond Mine in WA, there was a police station there that could test and issue licences. Did my written then on day of test grabbed one of the Coaster buses to drive up to the cop shop (alone), picked up the cop, drove 100m down the road where he said "too f***ing hot, turn around", returned to their station and licence was issued on the spot. Also got my motorbike licence in Perth, on the practical test the testing guy was a crusty old fellow, on return to the testing station he remarked "Son, get yourself some gloves ( I wasn't wearing any), otherwise if you fall off mum will have to wipe your arse". Never forgot that advice and have always ridden covered head to toe no matter what the temperature.

Never forgot that advice and have always ridden covered head to toe no matter what the temperature. Yeap it's real easy to see if a rider is experienced or not. Look to see if they are wearing gloves. If not then they are newbies about to find out how freaking nasty gravel rash is. The first thing that hits the ground is your hands.
I could happily ride naked except for a pair of gloves.
I did my HT while running Gt Northern Merchants timber yard in Whangaparoa. A Mitz Canter we had to put 1/2 a pallet of cement on to bring it up to weight. That thing was easier to drive than my golden Holden. During one of my lifetimes Te Waka Ora Transport decided I was worthy of every licence so I can now legally drive the biggest truck/trailers in NZ even though I never ever have.
At 8:45am on my 15th Birthday I'd ridden down and was sitting outside Devo Borough Council building awaiting the License man. At 10 past 9 I was licenced.

Often watch police highway cop shows and the number of restricted drivers carrying passengers and given 28 days compliance. No wonder the take the risk of driving when they vant get a test, sure small number have no intention of getting a licence or just pushing the boundaries.
Number 1 brought a new 250cc suzuki, did a riding test thing at local school, took the pas cert down to vtnz and given a learners after passing a therory test,2 months later did a ride for life course through the school which is paid for by ACC,I understand, next day did his restricted in Cambridge through a riding school.
So if a riding school can pass a rider for a bike licence, maybe time for driving schools to pass driving test. But if you get lessons through school A you must go to school F to get a licence so no conflict of interests?

Surely, if the issue is free re-tests, and everyone is just booking a dozen test slots 'just in case', surely the solution is to just allow only one booking at a time?
The kids will put more effort in to passing the first one. It still wont cost them the $120 or what ever each time if they keep on getting failed, but it gives everyone a fair suck of the sav to actually get a test.
PS, something that confused me greatly about the free retest thing. Who is paying for the time for the test assessor? Or have they all quiet cause they are expect by the Labour govt to spend half their time not getting paid? Second question, is this issue manufactured by VTNZ cause they can't make any money doing driver testing now?

Lack of testing officers, when I went to vtnz to find out today I was like number 20 in the cue and most were immigrants transferring licence over or wanting to upgrade to truck/taxi. The testing officer we dealt with at Pukekohe when number 1 got his car licence had enough of the abuse, non understanding of the english language and she said they basically cant drive.and want to argue why they failed.

The Ride Forever scheme is brilliant, so much so I still can't workout how it could have come from a Govt Dept. The idea is both the Govt and Insurance Cos could see how much hospital time was used by 2 wheelers. A lot due to lack of cornering skills and a few other spots so the course are set up around the areas more/improved skill are needed. At the same time Te Waka Ora Transport started the 'Watch out for motorbikes' campaign as 48% of 2 wheeler deaths are caused by 4 wheelers. The good bit is the amount of hospital time for 2 wheelers has dropped significantly since the program started, it is working and working very well. Having done 2 I can see why, they are very well run and focused. So while I'm still a bit Grrr...I have to pay 1000's a year for my bikes regos at least a little bit of it is actually being used for good. After riding for 40years and then purchasing a large roadie, Kawasaki1000, until then all were dual purpose or MX, I thought 'Ya don't know what ya don't know' so booked in Gold course. Did it and had a great day while improving my road cornering a lot and reduced the work load noticeably which is a good thing. Cost $50forthe entire day and in the debrief Dude gave us all a Certificate and said tell your insurance company, I did and they took a hundy of my next years premiums. A few weeks back I jumped into a Ride Forever gravel coarse on the Ducati. Again well worth it and a great days riding. Tidied up my adventure bike cornering, which is a bit different again to dirt or road. $140 notes for the day and the insurance people said they will take it off next years premiums as long as I don't arse up before hand Mr HT, make sure Number 1 carries on with the Ride Forever. Bronze is good but Silver goes deeper into cornering and thats a problem spot for many 2 wheelers. I'm told the Silver run from down your way heads over to Corro and does a great circuit for the day. I am planning on doing it when I get a break in the traffic. Anyone else on 2 wheels go do one. Cheap and a good days riding while you may learn a little somenting to keep you riding (by riding I mean alive) that little bit longer.
