My missus is convince her phone listens to our conversations. Numerous times we talk about buying something, then nekminnit there are Facebook ads for said product.
I've been walking around the house loudly saying I need a bigger boat, a new headsail and a 12v DC aircon unit, but it hasn't worked. Yet.

I believe it has been demonstrated your conversations are being monitored.
I reckon those surveillance outfits must be controlled by women. I bet if your wife started thinking out loud about a new pair of shoes you would be inundated with ads

Which is why I came off SM about 12yrs ago. Except for LI (my clients expect to see a profile but it’s dormant). And here.
And why my iPhone is locked down tighter than GG holding a dress.

I have some pretty flash security software on the work network and put it on my cell. Holy fuck the number of trackers, tracers and loggers is gobsmacking. The software had a field day killing and blocking them all.
I have a mate who is into digital security large (it's his job) and his private phone is a dumb phone. His theory is most people never secure their cell, how many reading this have dedicated security software you your phone*, and the smart sneaky fuckers can access near anything on that cell, including fiddling with the settings etc at which stage they can tweak things to their favour and the owner will never even know. So he recommends using a desk/laptop loaded with security for banking and so on and keep your phone either everything important free or make is a dumbphone. So my phone has sweet feck all that requires a log in of any sort including email. He also reckons installing locking software which will double lock apps/programs you pick against any access and the ability to change settings. My security has that locking feature so I turned it on,easy peasy to use and only visible when required.
* - Microsoft/google/Apple/big interweb players security systems look impressive and are generally pretty good but basic and they do have intentional holes which can be exploited, mostly for the companies own good, so that's why you need a dedicated security offering.

Here is another angle on digital security Apple is to be sued by a businessman after “deleted” messages he sent to sex workers were found by his wife on another device. The unfaithful husband, who has not been named but is reportedly a middle-aged man from England, claims Apple’s lack of transparency over deleted messages led to his wife filing for divorce.. He told The Times he had turned to prostitutes in the final years of his marriage, and would contact them through the iMessage app on his iPhone before deleting the texts. But the messages were eventually discovered by his wife on the family’s iMac computer, along with messages going back several years he believed he had wiped. www.stuff.co.nz/culture/350312337/cheating-husband-sues-apple-after-wife-discovered-deleted-messages-sent-sex

Foodstuffs have been "trialing" Facial Recognition technology in some of their supermarkets www.foodstuffs.co.nz/news-room/Facial-Recognitionit is now going to become permanent. one of those supermarkets is P and S at Silverdale which some of you here probably use.If you look closely at the entrance doors you will see a small notice saying they use FR. Have a read of their "Privacy Policy" which is basically saying they can do whatever they like with your data including passing it onto to a wide variety of third parties. The policy says bluntly if you don't accept this don't go into the shop. www.paknsave.co.nz/privacy-policy

"Where the FR System does not find a match between the collected facial image and a person of interest, then the collected facial image (and associate template) is immediately and automatically deleted."
WRT facial recognition, its not so bad, it does not link the facial model to your other data they collect either.
The data they do collect and share is no different to what you have been giving them for years, only way out of that is to use cash.

Being the mature adults we are, a bunch of mates have started playing a new game when we’re having a few beers. When someone goes to the toilet and leaves their phone on the table we start saying their name followed by a few colourful key words that would definitely trigger some red flags to anyone listening. We’re waiting to see who’s the first to get a knock on the door from someone officious…
