This situation sounds terrible: Boat went out yesterday (Monday) apparently targetting bluefin, so went out wide. Weather packed up faster than forecast. Two other boats that were out bailed about midday cause of the weather. Noted said boat wasn't back, so called police about 4pm. Bulk ship spotted two people IN THE WATER off Mahia, but being a big arsed bulker lost them (assume those things take several miles to turn around). MNZ / MRCC describe conditions as atrocious. I don't think they are exaggerating. Predict Wind shows 29 gusting 37 from 150 at Mahia. Apparently there has been fog since last night, really impacting helos, in that they can't fly. There is also a heavy rain warning, 150mm expected. A P8 went up last night, hoping they have fancy sensors that don't rely on good viz. Would be handy for finding the vessel, but I doubt a P8 could find people in the water when it is rough. They did get a helo to search the coastline, noting that the prevailing wind will push them in / on. I can't imaging being in the water in those conditions. Even with the best offshore LJ, hood, crutch straps the works, surviving in those conditions will be remarkable. They would have been in the water at least 24hrs, including overnight. Having done sea survival many moons ago, it is remarkable they were still alive when the bulk ship spotted them. Sea state sounds challenging for search boats, i.e. local CG, Napier tugs. Compounding that is utterly shit viz. No air support. BUT, they have been seen alive. Holy shit. www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/520513/live-updates-people-seen-alive-in-water-during-search-for-missing-fishermen-but-contact-lost

Just after 4 PM the NZDF P8 dropped a life raft in the area the men had been located.
Two people were identified in the water by a bulk carrier vessel earlier this afternoon, however they were unable to rescue them due to the dangerously difficult weather conditions.
The vessel attempted to provide the men with any available rescue materials they could throw overboard including life rings and flotsam. A third person is still missing.

Rang a friend in Gisborne and he answered so it wasnt him,he was out helping search the shoreline today but doesnt hold out hope,
He fishes out of gizzy in a tinny (20ft)and was tempted to go out but being ex comms skipper he reckoned the air didnt feel right.
Just seen your update"fish" good news for 2

Just seen your update"fish" good news for 2 Just cause they dropped a lifreraft doesn't mean they're found or ok. And given the wind state, I'd assume a liferaft wont stay in one place for long. That, and the guys still need the energy to get into it if they manage to get near it. If I'd been in the water for 24 hrs, I doubt I could haul my arse into a raft. Given it's not far off sunset, it could just be a last roll of the dice. Here's hoping it's not and there is some positive news.

Checked the coastguard app.Hicks bay 16knt Mahia 35knt still blowing, wonder why no epirb being out wide? If you aren't wearing it, and something happens quick like a capsize, epirbs aren't much good. So easy to end up in the water and the EPRIB sitting nicely in it's bracket in an upside down boat. Which is why I wear mine when I'm fishing, or solo sailing. I got a kayak fishing life vest just because of that, carry my PLB, VHF and a divers torch (very bright). But I doubt that life vest would be much good in those conditions. My sailing LJ is better, inflatable, 250n, double crouch straps, a hood and strobe light. Accept it is out of service date and needs $$$ spent on it. The hood would make all the difference in those conditions. A strobe light would be handy as well. Really worried with night falling for these three. Hoping they have been found and it just hasn't made the news yet. Chances of surviving a second night in those conditions doesn't bear thinking about.

Bloody social media fishing site I look at,fuck me,2 say they activated a epirb but got no response, what utter bullshit, how would you know that when no one found/spoken too? MNZ has no epirb activations and airforce picked up no beacons.

The search has been suspended for the night. If those guys haven't made it into a liferaft, I'd think they are gone. Possible they've been washed onto a beach, but I wouldn't rate my chances doing a surf landing on a rocky coast either.
The really worrying thing is that they were found but couldn't be retrieved, in daylight. Either by helo or surface vessel. Random reports on FB (so entirely unverified) that a helo attempt was made to winch but they couldn't get them, then the helo ran out of fuel. If a surface vessel found them, it's beyond me how you could get them onboard in a 6-8m swell and 40-50knt wind without killing them with the boat. It would take some skill and a fair amount of luck. You couldn't just rock up beside them and haul them over the transom.

Not sure to put this here or in the "Metservice is Shit" thread: Tatapouri Fishing Club President Roger Faber was also out fishing on Monday and spoke to the missing fishers. He said they were lured by some nice blue fin tuna which was caught off Gisborne over the weekend and a weather forecast that was meant to improve. "We all communicated with each other as we went out and talked about our plans for the day. "Unfortunately the weather was nothing like forecast, we expected it to get better, it didn't get better, it got worse," Faber told Morning Report. He said when he pulled back at 11am because of the weather, they tried to contact the missing boat but could not. "At the time we didn't think too much of it, we thought 'oh well hopefully they've just decided to go in earlier too'. "But then when we returned to the boat ramp and saw that their trailer was still there, that's when our concerns rose and we sounded the alarm." www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/520561/bodies-of-three-missing-boaties-found

3 bodies located. Very sad outcome At least they have found all three bodies and can have closure. It is gutting that at least two survived at least 24 hrs but still didn't make it. It must be really tough for those working as rescuers to have known where they were and that they were alive and not be able to save them. Sometimes the sea wins.

Sad about the list of lives but gives more ammunition to water safety/MNZ to enforce or come up with more regulations.Just need a bar crossing tradergy .They have plans in place

That looks identical to my old man’s stabi craft but with some cabin mods . Unsinkable in most situations but they don’t track well in a following sea . If you don’t restrict the throttle they can do a classic bow bury then dive off to port or starboard . Have come in from 25 miles out in a 2 metre swell on a summer sea breeze day and speed had to kept at 15 knots with throttle adjustment on the steep ones . They could’ve got caught out by a steep one and broached . Surprised the boat hasn’t shown up too .

View AttachmentThis is believed to be the boat. Edit, sorry, can't work out how to change the file type. open then save it as a .jpg. If that is not an option actually write Filename.jpg with the file type on the end and try saving that. Once I do that the machine sees the jpg bit and treats it as one. Here ya go Sad story. Especially so 2 were seen alive. Can't blame the big ship though, they aren't as easy to stop as dingys. The crew won't be happy they couldn't help I'd imagine.
