The comments being made here are mostly racist. Take a good look at yourselves. It is rather pathetic.

Come on grounded...
Talking about Maori and using facts or relating it to articles in NOT racist by any means.
You, like many, are confusing opinions and facts with prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism.
I, for one am part Maori 25%, so don't pull out that kind if nonsense.
Maori to call out all Europeans as murderous colonists is that racist?
Grounded, you may be a bit sensitive to these comments but not one of these is racist

The treaty is not a NZ wide treaty as such, only Northland tribes signed it hence why the Maori Kingdom has no bearing on Ngapui.

No not at all, and I made a mistake saying "made here" when I was not refering to this actual thread. But also in saying that, it's been a tough tiring few days with little sleep and as i can't think of the specific threads/comments, I could be thinking of other things i have been involved with over the last week. If acceptable to all, I retract my comment and offer my apologies. Yes it was Harrytom. Read up about the signing of the treaty in the South Island. You also obviously did not read my post about the Wairau incident. It was rather long after all. I discussed all about the signing of the same treaty right here by all the South Island Tribes and why the land wars started, due to me living right on top of the place where it all began. I didn't actually say anything like that schooner. In fact, what are you on about? saying "you, like many are confusing ........." kinda puts you in the same boat, because you are "assuming" me of something. In fact you made this post, and I have to say that you pretty much nail the main problem. I have said it several times, "squeaky wheel minority". Following comment not directed at anyone....just to be clear. It is easy to make a racist comment without realising. And especially with todays PC gone mad situation. But we have to remind ourselves, including myself, to be careful what is written. Especially myself, because I can't often find the words i want to express myself.
For instance, we have to be cautious when we say Maori. Because as schooner has said above, it is not all Maori. So using the term Maori when only a small group is being thought about, actually becomes racist.

Ok good defence, grounded. Btw, this caught my eye although it’s a pretty poorly written article as it’s written with a one-way lens ie it assumes racism is solely white against brown. www.stuff.co.nz/opinion/127326743/you-know-whats-really-undesirable-racial-profilingWhereas my belief is that in NZ racism flows both ways. Like the flood tide and the ebb tide (this is a sailing website after all). I also belief that NZ’s ‘new country’ status means it socially short on maturity & confidence and long on memories of early history as being the ‘single source of truth’ that should inform everything we do today. Whereas my experience with living in countries with longer histories is that the complexities of those longer histories creates nuances that makes things less black & white.

Interesting how things have changed in a relative short while. My childhood was in an isolated mainly maori area. We had different customs sure but day to day we lived our lives together and I don't recall race/skin colour/customs ever mentioned.Still meet up with some from then and we talk about today and ask ourselves how in the hell it got to this. Bewildering stuff

Wowwwww, views from both ends of the spectrum, some pushing out towards the ends of the spectrum, being discussed like grown ups with no eye gouging, hair pulling or dummies bouncing out of cots.
How the fuck is that being allowed to happen?

How the fuck is that being allowed to happen? I’d like the think this is what can happen when adults are treated like adults with just an occasional reminder about the ‘safety rails’ to maintain civil discourse! As we approach the end of the year I haven’t needed to moderate a single post. I know we’ve touched on some emotive topics over the last few weeks but I think that’s a good track record. Let’s try to maintain it and to also maintain (and grow) a wider base of users & views?

It's got close a few times but good to see the grown ups take a moment, take a breath then come back with a reasoned response, generally , rather than loaded with Ggrrrrrrr
I must say I am getting a wee twinge in the neck with Grounded and Schooner, but they aren't alone, though. It's like watching tennis with those two but it has been quite informative and thought provoking. Good to see 2, who obviously have quite wildly differing views in spots, being able to explain themselves without the need of cruise missiles or AK47's. I like to see both sides of the debate and it is a lot easier plus a lot clearer when that happens face to face, even if virtually, rather than having to swap publications to do the same.
Keep it up team. If you do I will cut down 10 sq/m of gorse and/or blackberry, shoot 3 possums and drink 3 beers in your name and honor. If you don't I'll still do the same but muttering '**** you bastard' as I do it
