Well it didn’t feel like a concocted story to me and I ask myself what is the motivation for a 15yr schoolgirl to stir up such a hornet-nest falsely? And her emotions on recounting the story look pretty genuine to me.
So it does sound to me like the store staff handled an everyday case of being alert for potential shoplifters really badly and insensitively. And yes with an pre-programmed agenda of suspicion based on her appearance (I’m not going to call it unconscious bias because I hate the term - I think it’s either conscious or not).

The story lacks balance, all stories I've seen have been one side of it only. With that lack of balance one does have to wonder why, is it the store did not respond or is it the store did but in doing so blew the story apart. As there are so few references to the store it's not a long bow to draw, rightly or wrongly, to think it did but the media didn't like it so they just ignored it completely. She is a millennial and having a few at the office I see near daily how they love to be offended and they will actively look for ways to be offended. The media love people being offended so it's little wonder they headlined this so fast.
While I have little doubt the young lady took offence I do have to wonder 'to exactly what?'
But none of that takes away from the fact, and it's arguable in the top 3 most solid factual things in NZ, that being NZ is absolutely racist as fuck.
How do we fix it? We can't it is now an industry and for those in it who play it the best it is a very lucrative industry.

We also need to understand that Media is divided into two main classes (leaving aside political leaning) of those very few that simply give a factual news story, and the ones where News is entertainment. Simply because Entertainment creates interest and interest creates listeners and listeners create Advertisment income. The best way to make it entertainment is to be contraversal. Don't give a down the middle factual story. Give something that creates discussion and arguement.
Does everyone know of the big discussion going on with FB at the mo? So it turns out that FB have as part of their Algorithm, the means of putting those with widely differring views together with the sole aim of creatings arguements. Yep, they want "blow ups" because that "draws a crowd". It causes a subject to remain active for a longer period of time and it creates wider discussion and arguments. In a nutshell, FB itself is not the commodity. We are the commodity. The same goes for us and Media. We are the commodity. We are what makes money for the Media.

Yes I realised that 10yrs ago which is why I deleted my FB account back then. And I told everyone who would listen / believe me. Not many as it turned out! The most telling thing for me was that all my Silicon Valley colleagues & network also keep off social media. One of them is the guy who invented the App Store - he kept his own kids off all devices until they were 14yrs. So guys that invent this stuff don’t let their own family & kids near it. That did it for me.

Of course NZ is racist as fuck. Our founding document divides our society by race. What other outcome would you expect. I think the country would be substantially better off if the Treaty were re-negotiated.
That and society as a whole tell Maori on a daily basis they are thicker, lazier, unhealthier and criminals, near constantly. Talk about a self fulfilling prophecy. Anyone with goals and aspirations would falter if they were bombarded so consistently with the message that you are a failure.

If that was so then why do so many Maori do so well and don't buy into the treaty thing and don't buy into the racism thing and don't vote for the Maori party... Because. ... They are happy without a handout, happy with the rules and regs, and happy with the white man ( as most of them are part European) As per usual, the loud mouth minorites, get the ear of the politicians and get what they want. When the tail wags the dog expect the dog to get pissed off and take care of the tail.

Anyone with goals and aspirations would falter if they were bombarded so consistently with the message that you are a failure. I think that’s a big part of it. The fundamental difference with racism I’ve experienced in other countries is the direction. For example in the UK a lot of racism with directed towards immigrants who were often regarded as ‘visitors’. It was the white Brits expressing racism towards the non-white immigrants. Here in NZ (like AUS and other places with minority “indigenous” peoples) the racism is directed the other way from the ‘new arrivals / visitors’ (eg white Europeans) towards the ‘first peoples’ (eg Māori, Aboriginal). But the common theme is racism from whites to non-whites. I think there are plenty of examples of it going the other way - as a white guy living in Indian I experienced it many times - but the more ‘headline grabbing’ examples seems to be whites dishing it out?

Fish, The Treaty has divided us and not in the way it was intended but by the way it has been twisted then used as a money and power grabbing mechanism. I would say that racism nowadays is just certain Maori minority groups pushing any cause they like , under a poor interpretation of the treaty, to get power or money. This is done by blaming everybody for thier perceived or real issues Today Bob Jones wrote this very appropriate blog ... This totally redundant treaty, applying to circumstances nearly two centuries ago, has spawned a truly astonishing “industry” in claims as to what it meant, despite never actually saying as much. The latest and most absurd comes from something called the Health Coalition Aotearoa, specifically, (lie down before reading further) “The burden of obesity has been disproportionately carried by Maori and Pacifica – half of all Maori adults are obese and a third of rangatahi (children) overweight or obese. More than 71% of Pacifica adults and half of children are overweight or obese.” According to this nonsense outfit this is apparently the government’s, or in other words the public’s fault and a breach of the Treaty. Extending the treaty to Pacifica is no sillier than the numerous other ludicrous claims relating to it. I first went to Samoa 60 years ago and travelled all over from village to village. Trust me, there were no fat Samoans. That’s certainly not the case today. But it’s not just islanders and maoris. Ask anyone over 60 and they will snap out the name of the sole fat kid at their school half a century ago who was such a stand-out, their names remain etched in their memories. What’s happened since is the weak minded stuffing themselves with rubbish, except of course, maori and Islanders who apparently have been held down and force fed with fried filth, contrary to a specific clause in the Waitangi Treaty banning this. One in five British homes don’t have a kitchen table. Why? They’re the working classes so many of whom who also feed on fried filth, eating with their fingers. Thus Britain’s high covid death toll, singularly attributable to obesity, the Brits having Europe’s fattest people. Maoridom will never rescue itself from its domination of the worst statistics so long as there’s idiots telling them it’s not their fault and blurting out those magical words “The Treaty'''.
