It’s a rapidly changing landscape . I’ve got a set of sails due to land this week from China . Measured locally by the loft i use and design is from an international loft . The cloth is dimension polyant Carbon . Main , #1 and gennaker . Total cost including shipping is what the cloth would cost in NZ . There’s the added security of the local loft making any adjustments if needed . I’ve seen some sails from Chinese mega loft and they are good , I reckon this will become the norm , the price is just to good to ignore .

Agree the price difference is so big it’s hard to avoid temptation.
And with dozens of sailing YouTubers demonstrating how easy the lofts have now made it to help you measure yourself and order sails, it looks like the future.

I think where the sails are made is a distraction.
North's make their sails in Sri Lanka (among many places around the world). North don't build sails locally. Doyly do / did. Not sure about Quantum. Think North's 3D moulding plant is in Darkest Texas, or Arizona or somewhere where the atmosphere is super dry.
When I got my new main the price from North's was 3 or 4 times the price I eventually paid. Same spec, cruising laminate radial cut. I couldn't for the life of me work out what the difference was other than the branding. And they confirmed it wasn't built locally... I can't remember what cloth I went with but it was like a CPX cruising laminate from Dymension Polyant (or possibly the Contender option). North's cloth are North brand, but having spent a considerable amount of time researching spec's I couldn't tell the difference.
Sure, when you get into 3D moulded monocoq carbon race sails for your 230ft superyacht, I am sure there is value in the North proposition, but for a 38 yr old Gulf Cruiser, nope.

Was your local loft quite open to the idea of measuring and adjusting if need be em? There are a few direct to consumer push bike companies and the price is generally much cheaper as you've cut the wholesaler out of the picture. Some of the bike shops would get pissy if you took your imported bike in to have something fixed, but they soon realised that people are going to spend their money where they want and they're better off welcoming the 'fix it' work.

I used B&G in botany. Took main and no2,he measured and sent off to hydes,lot cheaper than any nz sail maker,that was 6 yrs ago and he confirmed back then .Most lofts measure and get sent overseas.No isue if needed minor adjustments.Think it was 3.5k at the time for cav26 cloth wasnt straight dacron it was a mixed cloth of some sort.Had a weave through them.

When I bought Fogg, I got a new main + genoa (CDX laminates made in the same loft in Sri Lanka as North Sails).

Yeah no problem they measured and ordered them . The sail designs are off their data base in the US so the same as what they would’ve built for me here but I was able to upgrade to a premium cloth . Hybrid boltrope/slides will be added here and battens too . Not sure if it’s a new mega loft or an existing one that’s upped its game . I’ve seen the first set and the materials are legit and workmanship was good , boat moved forward at pace too so all good ! Seems like a few mobs are having a suss by the sounds .

I shop with local small outfits for 3 main reasons - 1 - The dude making them can be reached by my foot should the need arise, never has. 2 - Bigger the brand name the bigger the cost of the sticker in the corner is and most of the time it make zero difference to the sail itself. 3 - My NZ sailmaker helps pay the wages of NZ nurses and NZ teachers.

Is that a hint I should buy my next anchor off the local supplier? When is your website coming back to life?

The site is in staging now and we think maybe late next week we'll let the riff raff in. The work required to get it ready to open was a little underestimated but it'll be up with the basics to get going with.
I doubt there is much we do shopping offshore would save bugger all or anything. But that's no reason not to get a little bit of 'disruptive' happening.

Next time you think 'They are thieves, I can do it better myself' consider this. If you import an anchor you pay the product price and shipping, occasionally and depending on how you may have to pay GST. When I do it I pay - The product price plus Origin Port Licence fee Origin Cartage Ex works Origin Fuel Adjustment Factor Origin Shipping Line Document Fee SOLAS Administration Fee Export Documentation Fee International Freight Fee Bunker Adjustment Factor Low Sulphur Surcharge Fee Port Service Charge Delivery Order Fee Shipping Line Document Fee Destination Port Security Charges MPI BACC Processing Fee Administration Fee Destination Cartage Destination Fuel Adjustment Factor Vehicle Booking Fee Customs Clearance Charge Customs Compliance Fee Customs Entry Fee Origin CFS Terminal Infrastructure Surcharge Origin Road Toll Fee GST Duties and the other taxes that pay the wages of nurses and teachers.
That was all valid mid last week but I'm willing to bet if we suss in 3 months time the list will be longer, new insidious little, some not so little, fees and charges arrive nearly every invoice.
