We've often mentioned how Auckland Council is actively waging a war on cars, but it is about to move up to the next level.
AT announcing a region wide ban on free on street parking.
Substantially increasing parking fines.
And get this, in order to discourage people driving a car, they are wanting to levy private business owners for any off street parking.
Yet in the very same breath, AT are attributing the problem to property developments that don't provide off street parking. Hence why they say they need to levy off street parking. Cause that is logical?!?!
I'm sure the climate catastrophists will think this is fantastic news. We can all ride our Riley 10 speeds in the rain and wind, bugger productivity, or dropping the kids off to school (which AT acknowledge is not possible on public transport).
Sounds like a fantastic money making exercise for Auckland Council. They only thing that worries me is the example of Wellington. If you take out all the carparks and replace them with cycle lanes, then your business collapse. Your local economy implodes and your city centre dies.
I really would not want to be in any form of owner operator retail or hospo. The facts are, if you can't get somewhere, you don't go. I imagine all the ma and pa shops will shut, and everyone will revert to the Westfields of Auckland cause they are the only places with carparks left. Wonder how much AT will levy Westfield for having the temerity of providing off street customer carparking?
