Since the removal of Olympic selection trials i believe many sailors lost the inspiration they need to stay in the sport and push the boundaries of thier abilities against the best our country can produce. ..with this the sport has lost its depth and allowed Olympic qualification to be dominated by a few sailors who are wealthy enough to travel and qualify a class. I'll be interested in your thoughts in this.

Trials for sure, open to all comers.
The current arrangement isn't fair, doesn't allow the best sailors to compete and isn't workin.
But then it is the Olympics and the way they have so many limitations means they will never run the best of the best competition.

Its a much deeper issue than who gets selected, especially if the country is serious about actually winning medals. There is no mechanism to take the most talented junior sailors through to the Olympics. It all hinges on a kid having parents wealthy enough and committed enough to get their kid through the years of travelling and training before they end up on the radar of the sports elite body. Most of those kids get cleaned up regularly at club race days and local regattas, by kids that do have some innate natural talent. These are the kids you need if you are serious about winning gold. It would be incredibly expensive, and take a long time to implement, however if the country wants more gold then that's how you get it.
There is some serious issues with the current selection process too, its not just yachting either, a more transparent results based process would seem fairer for a start, less coach and sport management influence.

IMO Olympics are grossly overrated. World Championship is where it is for me. No artificial exclusion processes there. You win against allcomers, not just against selected (by whatever means) representatives. Like so many things the Olympics have run their race.

Nice stuff. Yeah!.. talented kids are put off by the complex system that favours the rich kids.
