I have a decent stereo, Yamaha driving Polk Audios that were sized to 'shake not only mine but the neighbours windows at the same time', it works well.
I want to take it to rural so I can just fang the crap out of it way from the suburban Karens etc but being a battery farm power useage is something to watch. Not knowing what a stereo uses I hooked in my metre that shows real-time power consumption plus accumulative, and gave it a handful.
Having it at loud, which is just enough to make the Wa give me the side eye with furrowed brow, the system running a CD was running at around 70-90W. Similar when using the phonograph and genre made no difference.
But take it to window rattling and it gets interesting.
Dropped in Zepplin No Quarter - We hit 200-210W
Dropped in a Avicci - peaked at 280W
Dropped in Robson ft Bruno Mars looking for a big base beat and Boom we were peaking at 330W
- So it uses a lot less than I expected when in usual listening mode and not quite as much when giving it a handful as I was expecting.
- Also old school big bass lines use less power than new big bass. I'm thinking, based on sweet fuck all actual knowledge, I maybe seeing the difference between analogue verses digital in the sense of how much data is in the respective tracks.
- When giving it a bit, in the more gentle parts of the digital tracks it was showing only 100W +/- but when the drop came BOOM up those watts rocketed very fast.
There is a very definite correlation between how much base is in the track, the vintage of the track and of course how heavy handed you are on the volume knob in relation to the power consumed.
As the new Victron battery monitor confirmed, on a heavy use day we are only dropping the battery bank 11-12% over night the stereo is moving north in a few days. I'll have my beefs boogieing away in no time, they do seem to enjoy kiwi 80's i.e. Mockers, Hello Sailor, Gilzs, etc. Also a big drum n bass track gets them a little excited as well.
Also, next time some pimply is having a crack at wrinklies fucking the planet just remind them what they listen too is 33-50% more resource sucking then what their parents listened to at their vintage.
