You don't need to tell me about it fella. Living it...or was until a few hours ago but suspect I will be again in a months time.
- Container out of Italy was 3.5-4K, now 12-13K. - Shipment leaves Italy by air last week, ormicon pops up and the airline decides not risk flying to so near gawd forsaken tiny country at the arse end of the world, shipment we think is now in Singapore, ETA 2022 or later. - 650 Anchors leave Melbourne 3 weeks ago bound direct to Akl. PoA tells ship '5 day delay', ship says bugger that and changes course to Tauranga. PoT tells ship 3 day delay to get it in. Ship does a U turn and unloads anchors in Sydney. - Order spares from Maxwell, 6km up the road from our place. NZ Post delivers them 23 days later. - Early this week NZC tell us 'Not picking up an parcels from Akl addresses as the warehouses are they full they have no where to put them'. Now picking thimngs up again. - 2 day courier service into the Sth Island is now 5-6 days.
How much room does this site have on the server, I can go on for a while yet.

A v smart and wealthy friend who is building a new boat in NZ realised this problem a while ago and figured that with interests rates so low and prices rising so fast and inventory disappearing even faster that they best use of his money was to buy the best kit available even if it’s well before he actually needs it. Which is why he’s got boxes of electronics and winches and s/s chain and god knows what else - all waiting for the boat to be finished many months from now.

Been doing the exact same with rural stuff. Sorted Tractor but won't get it until February, shipping willing. Same with a pump, missed grabbing one on the shelf by a week so now a 3 month wait.
We have lots of custies doing the same, or at least those who can*, stocking up knowing working on 'just in time' in NZ was always tricky but now is intelligent as walking around Sth Akl with 'Gang members are all pussies' boldly on a tee shirt. We have some who have tripled their std monthly orders knowing 'grab it when you can' works. When covid first started making a mess I suspected we'd be exactly here sooner or later hence we tripled the size of our building, ordered 2 containers of more chain, 1 of rope and pile of other goodies all over and above our usual ordering. Most arrived over lockdown so we've been flush, or 95% so, with stock, unlike most of our competitors who we are also supplying more then usual too. Also the lack of stock has us being swamped by punters who usual shop with others, so much so we have been turning potential customers away telling them try again in February at which stage we should be better placed.
Basically when you live on a tiny spot out in the boonies, as NZ is, 'stock is king' so we went hard to have lots and it's proved to be great but it looks like we are in a minority in doing that. Looking sad as yesterday but we have 40t odd arriving over the next month so we'll have stuff to go back too.
* - An interesting side angle we were chatting about earlier this week. Now things have got tighter we are seeing the divide even more than usual between old business and new business. Old business is solid, has cash and has a history of knowledge so is stocking up when they get the chance, most ordering 2-3 times more than they usually do. New business on the other hand is buying once they have sold it and keeping stock to minimum to allow wiggle room in the bank for all the cost increases and weird shit covid is costing.
We're also seeing LOTS of micro business's which have kicked off during lock downs. Things like people being good at a craft angle now turning that skill into a job type stuff. We're selling some weird quantities into some weird but often very interesting places. It's easy to see some won't last but a few will stick and inside those one or 2 maybe the future Rocket labs I'd think.
So basically if you want a bigger tractor than the Uni trained muppet working on 'just in time' will ever achieve, run the 'stock as king' program instead.
