Getting a bit off topic but why isn’t there a similar service for the Gulf during peak season? We tried to set one up some years back. We had the boat sussed and the mods sorted, a marina finger we could lower down the side with gangway for dings to tie too. In the hold a freezer full of ice and ice cream. Plus a decent sized oven we could bake bread in. And we had plans for supply beers and have a small bar on the top. By the time the assorted authorities got into it is the hoops to jump thru were just over the top. One bunch of muppets kept demanding we supply them with a diagram of the car parking. Another wanted details of how we'd get everyone safe in case an earthquake plus fire and a few other things. They never asked what the plans were if the thing sunk though.
We reckon it would have been a ripper but the authorities placed so many restrictions and demands on it a loaf of bread would take about 90mins to get and cost over $50.
So we pulled the pin and the other bidder ended up buying the boat. Some dude call Jackson who used it to carry a giant monkey going by the name Kong.
In the off season we'd load it with ice cream and head to the Pac Islands. Flick the ice cream and load the boat with old alloy beer cans we'd bring back and sell to scrappers to cover fuel costs.
I still have all the guff from it and the idea has not totally been abandoned even if it is out in the boonies.

There you go. It would have to be someone like GO30 to pull this off.
Call me if you decide to dust off the plans and consider resurrecting the concept. I lmight be interested in a collab…

That's her em. Parked by the silos for quite a while, next to a cute slightly smaller black number of similar vintage. Ok so if we push the button we need to add a swim platform Swimming off her was one of the issues the authorities had and one went as far as saying they wanted a life guard on duty in case someone decide to go for a splash. We were told that apparently if someone goes for a swim they could drown and that is not a good thing. Many, most?, had zero idea of boats and thought of the project as the corner dairy with a pub on it's roof. The costs would be huge and with so many of the better healed spenders owning bigger boats with decent fridges/freezers etc plus the ability to 25kt it to grab supplies, things that were not common back in the day. So I'm not that sure it would be a financial goer even if it could be a rocking life styler Plus imagine the mental fortitude you'd need to wade thru the assorted authorities and their demands before you could untie and get into it. While there still were many a muppet back in the day there was nothing like the infestation we have today. Tom and the team would know the horror they can be at times... then if you took it water borne add yet another pile of the muppets on top of all the rest. Like my new venture, all good as long as it is unmoving in a single spot but I want it moving so we're sending bureaucracy and red tape into a area new to them. But it gets worse, at some stage one or some of them will have to make a decision and do so with no precedence to do it for them/use as a out. Imagine the horror they will go though that day

I’m happy to hear of any other dinghy accessible stores you guys know of around the coast . Add to the list the general store at Port Fitzroy Gt Barrier; Leigh General Store -walk up the hill from the wharf in Omaha Cove; By the end of this year there will be quite a large 4 Square in Snells Beach (in the old Warehouse building), dinghy in 1 hr before high tide about 500m walk up Snells Beach rd. Already a couple of cafes and grog shops there. Just don't stay too long, the water disappears quite a long way; For a bit of adventure take the big boat up the Mahurangi to Warkworth, easy if you draw less than 2m. New World and Woolworths, Warkworth (Stubbs) Butchery and Pete & Mary's cafe

In the UK old light-ships were always very popular as floating pubs. That is light vessels, used as light houses anchored on station. The NZ equivalent would be to anchor an old ship of some sort in one spot, and run a bar and bistro. I expect the normal issues of doing hospo mulitplied by maintaining an old boat will kill the idea before you got past your 2nd pint.
How long has Tasman Prospector been anchored in Izzy Bay? Noting the owner is in prison for rape, but the example is an old ship parked up in one spot.
But then in the UK every possibly anchorage has two or three pubs on the waterfront. I think very few people cook onboard, it is get to the anchorage, dinner ashore for a pint and lamb shanks, the Sunday Roast or a steak & kidney pie. The tricky bit was always getting back to the boat after "just one pint..."
You actually have to sail a long way to find somewhere there isn't a pub on the waterfront.

Forgot about Warkworth ! Is there room to spin a boat around at high tide at the wharf ? We don’t have a bow thruster so backing and filling is the only way . Will be resdicovering that area for sure mahurangi area was our family’s favourite go to for camping and boating in the 70s and 80s .

Heaps of turning space at Warkworth, they turn the scow replica Jane Gifford around there no problem. You could probably overnight there, the basin has been dredged out to something like 2.5m at low tide. Other option is Robertson's Boatyard wharf, definitely plenty of water there at low tide. Ok we’re well off topic now but when I get a chance to grab my laptop I’ll log back in as Admin and create a new thread using the most recent lists about “dinghy runs ashore”.
Meanwhile, we always enjoy the Coromandel town experience especially because there’s good access for:
1. Shopping 2. Laundry 3. Eating out 4. Fuel (the service station just over the road from the dinghy tie-up spot) 5. Rubbish (buy bags from same service station) 6. Fresh drinking water (there’s a standpipe connected to the town supply hidden at the top left side of the boat ramp which you pass on the way in & out. We found this v useful in the days before we had a watermaker.

Still never managed Mahuranji / Walworth run - tried it many years ago and outboard ran out of fuel early on - thankfully it was a short row back to the boat measured in minutes not hours.
Favourite fun run ashore in dinghy to date was Keri Keri Inlet a few years ago with the family. Seem to recall it was a good distance but could make good speed in a planing dinghy for the first part. Then it became a nice, meandering ‘Swallows & Amazons’ experience for top part of the creek.
Tied up dinghy near the Stone Store and enjoyed a stroll around the historic building and store, followed by a long lunch at the restaurant nearby. Which made both parents & children v happy. Remember it being a scorching day so by the time we were heading back down the creek everyone was getting over-heated - so we opened up the taps and raced the last bit back into open water, stripped off and jumped into the ocean for a cooling dip 😊

Back to KBC…
Had dinner there again this eve. Was v good.
I met Daniel and he was friendly, welcoming, helpful etc.
You can tell some people are designed for hospitality work and others not… well he obviously is.
Anyone who’s had a bum experience in the last few weeks was probably unlucky and I would encourage trying again.

Anyone else getting repeated email reminders from KBC to say their annual membership is now “Overdue” (in bold red letters)?
I admire their ambition to maximise revenues from membership with high % renewal rates obviously being key.
But it’s not like I’m overdue the premium on my boat’s insurance contract - so it seems a bit of a stretch describing an optional, non-contractual annual membership fee as “overdue” in the same way!

That is me sending those.... note the club is run by volunteers, we have no paid admin staff, so Im doing this in my spare time. Apologies for how it is done, the system is painfully manual and Im not a Xero expert.
We run a spreadsheet and the decision was made to email everybody, as we do not have the ability to roll over subscription as other sports and clubs do each year.
The great news is we have had a fantastic uptake, the flip side is, if you dont pay, the system will automatically send you a reminder. If you dont want to join, please email the clubhouse email address on the invoice and Ill remove you from the database.
This way we are sanatising the spreadsheet and know who the ongoing members will be, and we'll look to see how we roll over those invoices next season, once Ive worked it out.
Though Id much rather you support the club and pay yer subs! We've invested heavily in keeping her open and we need all the support we can.
Cheers Tom Club Secretary
