Take Nukes out of the equation. If Nato goes after Russia the mess wouldn't be much less. All it means is millions of innocents will still be murdered, they will just die slower. if they nuke you with a bomb that explodes in 5kms in the air.... The deaths will be very slow!... And for decades.

Nobody will launch a nuke. They all know what will happen next.
Tell me where Putin would aim the first one?...
USA... No
Ukraine... No
Anywhere... Nope!
What would be the point?... There will no winners. And Putin will be seen as a failure of Hitler proportions and nearly as bad as Jacinda.😜

People (like me) used arguments like this incorrectly just a few weeks ago when trying to predict Putin - only to be proven tragically wrong by what he did next. The only thing I would predict about Putin is that he’s now more unpredictable than ever. And so no, I no longer think nuclear war is unrealistic - I think it’s a small (but real) possibility.

Not all nukes make huge bangs like seen on TV. They have taken a lot of effort to make smaller ones that can be fired by tanks and only wipe out smallish areas.
Don't forget Putin has been saying all along he doesn't want the Ukraine, just a few bits of it and to remove the nazi threat. So if that's true why not just nuke Kyiv, it's not like he's got a use for it.

He has short range ballistic missiles that are already deployed that can carry either conventional or nuke warheads. The 'Iskander' - and no, it is not a type of kebab. These are substantially smaller and far more tactical than the big fuck off ICBM's that have 10 nuke warheads each. Two to a normal sized truck, rather than one massive one on an 18 wheel heavy mover. Couple of picks in the below links: www.nytimes.com/2022/03/14/us/russia-ukraine-weapons-decoy.htmlen.wikipedia.org/wiki/9K720_Iskander

Surely there is a point at which even Putin can see the pain he is inflicting, just to grab territory for ego reasons, is wrong and he would be the ultimate loser.

in term of conflict resolution I don't think it matters about the size of your nuke .. it's the principle that counts ?

For Putin to stop he’s got to achieve something significant otherwise his prolog and a machine will have nothing to show.
We’re seeing signs that Ukraine is prepared to agree to never seek to join NATO if it helps bring the ear to an end. But if that was the sole concession it would be a tragedy because that condition was previously in place but was dropped in the last couple of years - meaning it was a preventable faux pax by both Ukraine and NATO / West.
There would have to be a couple of other territorial concessions alongside the non-NATO promise to give Putin a face-saving way of wrapping this up, methinks.

There is also another ‘win’ for Putin even as things stand today. He can no longer be accused of sabre-rattling and idle threats.
Meaning if he doesn’t like the look of any other country’s behaviour eg in Scandinavian region, if he makes noises and threats then everyone will be treating him more seriously than pre-Ukraine.
In other words the mere fact he has gone to war - even without winning - has given more leverage to any of his future ‘aggressive rhetoric’.

we read about how various European countries are freezing Russian oligarchs assets, seizing their boats etc. Wondering what the legal basis is to do that - is their a declaration of war between these countries and Russia to enable this?

Good question. I’m guessing that these fall under the same category as other ‘suspiciously obtained assets’ that are seized by authorities everyday in normal life eg drug-related assets. But in this case the dubious nature of those assets has been ignored for diplomatic reasons to maintain relations with Russia but that motivation has now gone. Hence the legal machine has been set free to target them too now.

All of that is just sideline dribble.
The real big question that needs to be answered is - 'Who would win the one on one fight Musk has challenged Putin too?'
Putin is into martial arts and would have bound to have trained in hand to hand, but he's getting a tad aged. Anyone know what Musk would bring to the ring?
