Turbos are quite neat - using otherwise lost energy in the exhaust gases, and they are quite simple too, but if not given a cool down the bearings in them can turn oil into carbon and tar which then leads to trouble... i understand the ceramic turbos are moderately immune to this problem but the safe bet would be to give them a cool down period. Exactly that …the tar/hard deposits on the bearings then breaks up and wears out the bearings . and yes they are simple and mostly easy to replace if they are easily accessible . Most Turbos you can replace the bearing cartridge which saves $$ and is a very simple task

we run at 70 litres an hour at 18knots. Seems a lot, but can get to Te Kouma in a couple of hours from Westhaven, no wet weather gear etc. Life is short. Used to sail, four hours min to the end of Waiheke. Still love sailing, but love getting somewhere anchoring up and relaxing that is further than Issy bay on a friday evening. On the bigger Rivs etc, if you are spending $2m+ and worrying about the fuel, you bought the wrong boat! 70lts per hr at 18 knots??seems excessive, considering just done 386km ,38t ,225lts.90kph AK to Te Kouma 36 miles

figures for a Riv 39 - your size? As Rivs go, this was quite an efficient model, and performed better than a 36 with the same engines RIVIERIA 39 2 x 300hp Cummins 10750kg LPH KTS 12.4 7.8 20.8 8.9 24.4 10 31.2 12 42.2 14.7 51.6 17.7 58.8 19.9 71.4 23.2 85.6 25.9 105.8 26.4

I have a 36 RIVIERIA 36 2 x 300hp Cummins 8645kg RPM LPH KTS LPNM 1200 16.4 8.2 2 2 1400 28.8 8.8 3.27 1600 45.8 9.8 4.67 1800 58.4 11 5.31 2000 70.2 13.8 5.09 2200 74.8 17.5 4.27 2400 84.2 21.2 3.97 2600 105 24.8 4.23 2800 134.4 27.9 4.82 you can see the effect of the turbo doing its thing at 2200rpm,and the boat being properly on the plane c.f 2000. Also note running at 2400 actually gives better litres per nautical mile than at 2200, obviously the engine/hull sweet spot. You can see from my previous the 39 is only burning 51 litres/hr for 17kts compared to the 36 burning 74 litres/hr. How's that for an excuse to buy a bigger boat

Where did you get those fuel burn tables from for the Rivs. Our son bought one just before Xmas but he's not sure of fuel consumption.

I used to copy them from the boating magazine tests and keep them on a spreadsheet. They were mostly from the days when Len Gilbert and John Menzies used to do fuel consumption tests on most new launches What size/engines Riv has he got? I will see if they are on my spreadsheet, otherwise John Menzies will most likely have them.

This is quite an interesting thread. Shall I move it to the ‘On The Water’ Forum?
GO30 - as the OP - are you happy with that?

He bought a Riv 32 with 2x210hp Cummins on shafts. Built about 1986 or there about so it was in Lens time.

Built about 1986 or there about so it was in Lens time. this is from a 90's model, should be pretty close RIVIERIA 3300 2 x 210hp Cummins 7780kg RPM LPH KTS LPNM 1200 13.4 8 1.67 1400 21 9 2.33 1600 31.5 10.2 3.08 1800 44.6 13.4 3.32 2000 56 15.9 3.52 2200 68 19.6 3.46 2400 80.8 22.7 3.55 2600 88.4 25.2 3.5 once again notice most economical running on the plane at 2200rpm
