A major search and rescue operation is underway off North Cape at the top of the North Island.
It was sparked by a vessel settting off its distress beacon last night. Five people have been rescued but 5 more are understood to be unaccounted for.
Maritime NZ said this morning the Rescue Coordination Centre is leading a significant operation off North Cape.
"An emergency position-indicating radio beacon was activated by a vessel at about 8 pm Sunday," it said.
"The rescue is still active, with helicopters searching from the air and vessels supporting the search as well."www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/vessel-sets-off-emergency-beacon-off-top-of-north-cape-rescue-under-way/R7JX72JKQNSMNLSHJUQVV45SOM/apparently still searching the coastline for the missing 5

This is looking very concerning. Five missing. Beacon activated at 8 pm last night, they've been coping this weather for 14 hours already. I'm not sure how or where you can shelter from NE / easterlies at North Cape. AIS shows a fishing boat in the area. Coastguard wouldn't go out - too rough! Airforce Orion, Whangarei and Auckland Rescue Helicopters, sounds like they have every air asset they can get. That is great now, but wouldn't have been much help in the dark on a lee shore in a gale last night. What sort of fishing boat carry 10 crew? Wouldn't have been a charter would it, in that weather. I initially wondered if it were a race boat. Most local fishing boats carry less crew than that. I tried windsurfing in flat water at Manly yesterday evening and got a hiding. Having done a sea survival course in the past, I would expect I'd last between 3 and 5 minutes out in the swell and wind waves. A lee shore would be fairly much terminal, if it were rocky. Five survivors, but I am feeling very concerned for the five missing. www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/463700/five-people-rescued-five-missing-as-significant-operation-underway-off-north-cape

pretty solid looking boats enchanter.co.nz/boats/2 from the Australian crayfishing scene - Marco's are built in Perth Notable that all are described as "offshore registered .. for NZ Waters"

Presumably this will automatically lead to a MNZ enquiry?
I’m trying to remember when this bad weather was first forecast - it was a few days ago I think?

If they do, it will be entirely ineffective, and lead to more regulations completely unrelated to what caused this tragedy. But I am thinking the charter fishing industry will be in for something. The last major tragedy was the charter boat crossing the Kaipara bar. What was the toll on that one, 7?

For sure there will be an enquiry and it may be messy. It appears the skipper does not have a NZ Maritime qualification, website says a "qualified offshore master" and the vessel does not appear to have an MMSI number, which I would expect for a vessel in survey. There is no sign of a port of registration from the photos of the Enchanter.

Possible they ran into wind against tide coming around the corner at Nth Cape, would have been horrendous seas

If that is the case (not wanting to speculate while they are still looking for those missing), it would sound very similar in root cause to the Kotuku tragedy. Was that 7 or 8, off Stewart Is, taking people to the Mutton Bird islands. Skipper was actively avoiding the MNZ inspector prior to the trip. Obviously, in that one, the actual cause was hopeless loading of the boat, with all the weight up high, but the general principal of not following current regulations would be the same.

The skipper(and owner) of the fishing charter boat (and company) that sank during a storm in the Far North last night survived and rescuers continue to search for the remaining two people lost at sea.
It is understood a group of Aucklanders were onboard the Enchanter fishing vessel when it first raised the alarm just after 8pm last night.
Experienced skipper Lance Goodhew then radioed into Radio Mangonui at 10pm saying he was about an hour off the North Cape before losing signal
An hour later the boat was submerged underwater at Murimotu (the island off north cape) leaving the 10 onboard scrambling for survival.
"Apparently it was on their journey north back to the Three Kings that they struck torrential weather."

... some confusion in the media reporting It was heading back from Three Kings Islands when the weather turned. Three Kings Islands are a group of 13 uninhabited islands about 55 kilometres northwest of Cape ReingaA fishermen said Three Kings is currently having the best game fishing in a decade and all the charter boat companies are heading out there.

Yeah I’m ignoring most of the media stories & speculation on this one until the dust settles a bit more. I struggle to believe that anyone was actually heading OUT into that but no doubt we will hear in due course.
Meanwhile I hope the missing two have a guardian angel looking over them until they can be found ok…
