New research has revealed a concerning increase in the number of dog attacks.
Around 25,000 dog-related injuries are recorded each year - leaving hundreds of people in hospital. And the victims are often children.
"One-hundred-and-sixty children are hospitalised every year, that's just something that I think is unacceptable," she said.
Auckland Council figures reveal a similar trend. In Auckland between the end of 2021 and early 2022, there was a 67 percent increase in the number of roaming dogs.
Attacks on animals are up - by 31.5 percent. Attacks on people have also risen by 26.1 percent.
"Partly that would be due to the lack of de-sexing. There are still a shortage of vets, but also dogs just not being socialised," said Auckland Council Animal Management manager Elly Waitoa.
Both Waitoa and Duncan-Sutherland say low socio-economic areas record a higher number of incidents and legislation around dog ownership needs updating.www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2023/03/new-research-reveals-concerning-rise-in-dog-attacks.html

Banning ephedrine in cold medication was going to stop the home bake issue?
Microchipping dogs was going to stop dog attacks?
keeping crims out of prison was going to reduce crime?

the group vandalised and damaged the restaurant's new canopy and the awnings need fixing.
Molloy said this will see the restaurant without outdoor shelter for around four weeks. He estimates the cost of direct damage will be around $50,000 but after the loss in turnover it will be "hundreds of thousands of dollars".
Molloy said it's "not a great situation" and the behaviour by the group and the police's response was "unacceptable".
He added it's "incredibly frustrating" none of the suspects had been arrested and they had been let off so easily.
Molloy told Newshub the police's response was "weak as piss" and they were "too lazy to arrest them".
...
The police spokesperson said officers had undertaken to facilitate reparations between the owner of the restaurant and those responsible for any damage.www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2023/03/leo-molloy-fumes-at-police-after-no-one-arrested-for-causing-hundreds-of-thousands-of-dollars-of-damage-at-headquarters-restaurant.htmlhopefully they'll fix what they damaged and the police inaction will be understood

Yes....they'll get counselling, free uber rides to victim impact meeting and no recompense.. Waste of time. I attended one of those representing victims and got a lecture from bureaucrat as to what I was allowed to say. He sat there with his Aunt and a smug smile .All I wanted to say was 'you little arsehole' and leave . It was more punishment for me than him .Bureaucrat and Aunt talked about his 'rehabilitation'. Would have made good copy for Marx brothers skit

What hasn’t been taken into consideration by the government is that the more that ministers talk about separating out services for Maori, the more that Maori expect will be delivered. Constantly going on about their disadvantage with selective yarns about colonialism and silly assertions like Kelvin Davis’s which I drew attention to in my last column, are encouraging more and more of those in the underclass to opt out of the educational and health systems and embark on varying forms of lawlessness. Some statistics I’ve seen say Maori school attendance is now as low as 37%, while kids as young as ten feature amongst ram raiders and recent break-ins to liquor stores. And why not? If foolish ministers keep saying that the current system is broken for Maori, and isn’t fit for purpose, why should kids go to school? Why not join a gang? Why not steal cars and create a bit of mayhem? It’s one hell of a lot more exciting than attending school. These futile, and largely erroneous messages being preached by ministers actually encourage civil disobedience. The ties that bind our society together into the New Zealand we were once proud of have had to be nurtured over the last century. There is every prospect that all the most divisive policies will be back if Labour is re-elected. The underclass fail to see much reason why current laws should be obeyed in the meantime.www.bassettbrashandhide.com/post/michael-bassett-hipkins-and-his-policy-deferrals

Note the language. "No longer an undue risk". Doesn't mean he's not a risk... Wonder where this would sit if the 3 strikes law was in place when he first offended in the late 90's? Would hope he'd still be locked up, for life. As in his actual natural life.

nice one ginny!
any plans other than the standard labour head-in-the-sand?
Waikato police say businesses are increasingly being targeted by young armed robbers, striking during business hours.
Gordonton Superette owner Manish Thakkar shared a video with 1News of a robbery last month where he was attacked with fists and then threatened with a handgun. The robbery happened at 7pm, with customers in the store.
"He pointed the gun at me and asked me to give him all my money," Thakkar said. "His hand was constantly on the trigger."
He said it was ninth or 10th robbery in recent years, adding the attack made him angry.
"I was just thinking, how can I punish these guys? I was looking for something.

retail crime doubling in some areas since labour came in and said reducing the jail population was more important than property rights In sentencing Dylan Leon Kahia to two years and seven months’ prison, Judge John McDonald said too often shopkeepers and workers were violently verbally abused or assaulted by shoplifters who thought it was their right to take whatever they wanted.Judge McDonald said Kahia had failed before when he had promised to get clean from methamphetamine and he wasn’t convinced this time would be different. The sentencing came just days after data was released showing the number of reported incidents of retail crime in the Bay of Plenty doubled between 2018 and 2022, with a 33 per cent jump from 2021 to 2022 alone.pre-sentence report said he had a high sense of entitlement.“You lack consequential thinking and shift blame to others - [it’s] never your fault.”Taking into account a 20 per cent reduction for guilty pleas and 10 per cent reduction for issues raised in a cultural report, Judge McDonald handed down an end sentence of two years and seven months’ imprisonment.www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/rotorua-taupo-and-tauranga-violent-serial-shoplifter-addicted-to-methamphetamine-sent-to-prison/QQBLBNTDCVALDDBJUOISIRBHYE/

this is what labour breeds with their "poor darlings" approach A teen who went on a 48-hour car stealing spree told police he could “do what he liked” now that he was an adult.
But the court disagreed and told him that despite his own challenges, he has caused considerable pain, suffering, inconvenience and financial loss to the owners of the cars he smashed his way into and then dumped.
Pomare Pui, 18, was sentenced this week in the Nelson District Court to 12 months of intensive supervision with judicial monitoring after earlier admitting six charges of unlawfully taking vehicles.www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/crime/teens-car-stealing-spree-leaves-vehicles-with-huge-damage-and-owners-with-big-bills/5PQPJC2NDBFF7OOM2CJSPKRE2M/
