Sorry Fogg but when members of parliament who are responsible for governing our society are running around nicking very expensive stuff like a lifestyle 4th generation beneficiary then they are always going to get a spotlight shone very brighty on them and so they should.
Acting like this sort of behavior is not very news worthy sets a very low bar imo.

always very sad when someone implodes
but not as sad as someone getting taken out by someone or something for no reason
if she pleads guilty at the first opportunity, feb1, it should be all over in a few weeks
and in the aftermath we can ponder what lessons we've all learned
so far, it's been really instructive

As usual, I like to step back and taking a slightly less breathless & sensationalist view than the masses… Remembering, as most of you well know, I’m far from a Greens supporter. In fact mostly a vehement opposer. Also, I don’t know GG. Never met her. Watched her in action a few times and she appeared no better or worse than any of the rest of them across all sides. So. I see she’s now been charged. Which means the proper process is now being followed. It also sounds - from early indications of statements from the Greens & GG camp - that there’s a good chance she is guilty and knows it. And I wouldn’t be surprised if she pleads guilty on the day. Where does that leave me? A bit sad actually. Like I said, I’ve never met GG and have no connection at all. She’s obviously done something very stupid and has been caught. And she looks likely to continue paying the consequences - which have already started well in advance of any verdict, by the way . I once committed the crime of drink-driving (in the UK) and the consequences were pretty awful. Even for a private citizen like me, let alone a public figure. And yes it caused me huge stress at the time. I was old enough to know better but young enough to learn my lesson. Which I did. So. I understand the sensationalist interest in all of this but at the end of the day it’s just another person in NZ caught shoplifting. And it looks likely nature will run its course and justice will be done. In which case, I’m ready to move on. Because I really don’t think NZ as a country is going to progress any faster in the world by obsessing over the minutiae of a trivial event, and the right vs wrong reactions of the Green party leaders. I don’t like Shaw or the other one. But I don’t care - nor does the wider world - whether they played a perfect or imperfect game of crisis management around this affair. Time to move on, NZ, and focus on the bigger picture (if you remember what that is)… I have to agree largely. Putting aside the sensationalism for a bit, it is very sad. Not just for the complete pointlessness of the thefts and the destruction of her career. The bit that really bugs me is the pattern of minority women of colour completely imploding. That is GG and Kiri Allan. That is if you call two a pattern, but they are close together in timeframe. Sure we have had cis white men implode. Jamie-Lee Ross. Todd Mueller, although I credit Tod Mueller hugely for actually managing his implosion. I'm a bit put out she is blaming workplace stress, and the whole narrative coming across that she is actually the victim. That element is saying black is white. But what I want this post to be about is the quality of our Members of Parliament. Clearly we have a problem here. I've never been close to Parliament, but almost every one talks of the mental pressures and fishbowl nature of it. These actions (blatant retail theft) is what I actually expect of the Maori Party. I'm really uncomfortable with their 20 yr old spinner. Not because I don't like their politics, but because I can't believe a 20 yr old in their first job as the maturity to handle the situation. But for an experienced 43 year old with a previous professional career, even though I don't like her politics, that is really not good for our countries representation. How do we get better representation in Parliament? I mean a higher standard of people? Possibly the easiest thing to do is vote for the competent ones and ignore the rest. Another element would be to not toxically get stuck into the shit ones. That is more of a cultural thing though. I believe it is possible to criticise someone without using abuse. No chance of ever legislating that, just a thought though.

Time to move on, NZ, and focus on the bigger picture (if you remember what that is)… On the money. Move along and let the system play out without the media attention.

Stop making excuses. She is a tea leaf, she does know better but she still won't get what she deserves.
I'd also suggest a VERY LARGE amount of the attention this is getting is purely due to her and the Greens sanctimonious attitude. She will die by the very sword she and her party has been swinging at others for so long. The same reason there was so many happy when Jacinda left, most of the shit she got was only returning the shit she threw in the first place.
There is also the Greens absolutely shit PR around it all. They should not have spent weeks trying to get out of it as they certainly did, they should have fronted up at the time and been honest, something they are still not doing. If they had this whole thing would be history already.

Well said . meanwhile up north Iran is lobbing missiles into Pakistan (nuclear armed country ) Kim Jong Un is threatening to obliterate South Korea and the US which he’s not capable of doing but will make a hell of a mess if he tries . China is most strongly upset at the US for endorsing Taiwans re elected Govt because Taiwan “belongs” to China . Trump and Co are hell bent on riling up the Nutjobs into some sort of unrest to distract from his multitude of court cases . Then there’s the Middle East and Eastern Europe crises which could get very very ugly at any minute . NZ politics are kindergarten grade by comparison . my takeaway from years of scandals that have arisen is that many people that enter politics regardless of which party they are in end up breaking the law or rules in some way . I put something illegal in my antifoul last week ….imagine if I was the prime minister and the boatyard manager told the herald

And don't forget wellington's new young green mayor, tory whanau
- "don't you know who I am?"
- "do i really have to pay?"
- "I left without paying because I was drunk"
- "ok, i've got a drinking problem"
i doubt she would have been voted in by the people of wellington if they had known what they were getting
but they've got her now
hopefully she can fix the capital's broken infrastructure without sending too many pensioners into mental heath problems due to rate rises outstripping pensions

You want to be a crim, go be one. You want to be a politician, go do that. Job description for politician does not include shoplifting. It does include tax theft 😂😂

I’m not defending GG at all and I agree with all of you that she’s done wrong and some of her Green colleagues have also not done great last couple of weeks. But all I’m saying is the volume of attention this is getting far outweighs its importance in the history of what is important for NZ! You can pick holes in ever little bit of both GG and the Green Party’s leadership behaviour - and fill your boots with it - but it won’t help NZ Inc travel any faster or better in the world as a result. Which is what is more important to me.

yes, our continually falling education standards will have far more effect or our future
than if gg gets 500hrs community service or none
but it does show the normalisation/trivialisation of criminality after 6 years of labour's "be kind to criminals"
apparently it's not their fault that they get taken over by their demons
and if we could just be kinder and reduce consequences for poor choices
counter-intuitively
they won't get worse
they'll get better!
...
just imagine if gg hadn't been pinned shoplifting a total of $20,000? 3 times over 3 months
she surely would have stopped somewhere around $100,000? when the itch to have free designer gear had finally been scratched
of course, she also may also have started test-driving teslas and not coming back
why would she
if there was no penalty?
...
we could do the experiment
tell green party members that they can take teslas for test-drives
and there will be NO penalty
if they're not returned
we can say it's not something the green party would encourage.....
BUT, there's no penalty if they're not returned
as long as they can justify to themselves that they need a luxury EV more than musk and his shareholders do
that's good enough for the nz justice system!
...
it's not longer IF nz gets a racist, marxist gov. along the lines of cambodia, zimbabwe or venezuela
it's when
2026 - 15%
2029 - 45%
2031 - 60%
2034 - 90%

www.chrislynchmedia.com/news-items/shoplifting-scandal-exposes-media-bias-covering-golriz-ghahramanThe Green Party press conference was a mockery of journalism.
It resembled less an inquiry and more a theatrical performance, with reporters meekly accepting a pre-packaged narrative.
This wasn't journalism; it was public relations. When did our media lose its spine, trading hard questions for comfortable narratives?
Look at the far left online magazine The Spin Off’s coverage for example. Their article “The dramatic exodus of brown women from parliament is no surprise” is a prime example of lazy journalism.
It's as if their ability to analyse any situation is handcuffed by their obsession with race.
By focusing on Ghahraman’s ethnicity, they ignore a myriad of other factors, simplifying a issue into a single-dimensional narrative.
