Our mate Aquaholic has jumped the gap and sounds like he is about to join the convoys of grey nomads and their caravans , hope you have some great times. Like everywhere, Australia has its pros and cons compared to other locations. Aquaholic will say quite rightly the biggest pro for him right now is no Stabcinda, but for sure Australian politics has plenty of loony tunes bludging off the taxpayer I was based in Perth (worked away alot and did spend 18 mths living in Melbourne) from 1986 to 2004 - went to Perth to see the America's Cup and sort of got stuck there. The biggest pro I would say for Australia was the opportunity for career advancement, if you are prepared to take advantage of the opportunities and don't mind travelling/working away you can go far quite quickly. It was notable that on alot of the remote jobs there were not many Australians, it was mainly expats. The main downside I see now is that altho some costs are lower eg fuel, you just seem to be paying and paying. Comparing some NZ and Australian costs ( i will use WA because that is what I am most familiar with Firstly, buying a house or land anywhere in Australia you have to pay stamp duty, about $42k on a $1M property in WA. Housing costs in Perth are on par with Auckland, Sydney and Melbourne much higher, Brisbane a bit less altho friends there have told me of some crazy sale prices recently Council rates, calculated on rentable value in WA, paying $1,800 for an old house . Water rates are $1,200pa for the connection charges, consumption charge starts at $1.90/kl, sliding scale as consumption increases, no waste water charge Buy a car, stamp duty again, sliding scale in WA, up to $25k 2.75%, above $50k, 6.5% Car registration, my Camry costs $102.90 in NZ, WA $830.00 Motorbike registration, my suzuki costs $528 in NZ, WA $660 Drivers Licence; NZ 10 yrs $43.90 , WA 5 yrs $149.50 Boat registration, CZ would cost $598.10 in WA per annum (its just a tax) WA recreational skippers licence: around $250 for course plus $30 for licence - one off. QLD charges $120/yr for your ticket. The other elephant in the room is capital gains tax on investment properties/baches/share sales. If someone offered me a decent paying job would I go back again - absolutely. But just want to highlight there are swings and roundabouts on the cost of living there.

Good timing 😃
Re my previous post today... It's not about the money nor the costs ... But, a few days in here's a few observation ...
Expensive...
Wine, beer, kiwfruit ,(IGA $2.49 each), Same...
some fruit/ vegetables
Cheap - coffee, meat, most groceries ( went to new Aldi and most stuff about 40% cheaper then NZ), Cars, caravans, boats, houses ( including stamp duty/ title transfer), furniture, cafes, takeaways.
By the way.. no WOF. Just keep you car registered and maintained and your sweet

1st yr of working over there .I got basically %90 tax rebate,2nd yr claimed phone, boots etc, phone had maps so deemed a work tool.Wife recieved $250 pw as a stay at mum with 2 under 5s,once started school benefit stops.Still entilted regardless of my income $1700 after tax 2002/2003. When number 2 born qualified for $3k family start package, unlike in NZ when number 1 born got a payment then had to pay back end of tax yr due to exceeding income, found power/phone charges a lot higher. Found so much more to do with toddlers in Aussie compared to NZ.
Should of stayed there but with the threat of terrorism(blowing up the harbour bridge)and Howard sending out a pamphlet."is your neighbour a terrorist" time to come home.

As I mentioned some costs eg housing very much related to what city/what state you live in. The "no WOF" once again depends on your state and if a car is being sold, annual roadworthy inspection required in NSW (blue/pink slip), QLD and VIC require inspections to sell, WA only requires inspections for first registration or interstate transfers. The different rules between states can be a nightmare to navigate, I remember all the hoops we had to jump thru to transport over dimensional loads across 3 states..

For me, cost of living is only one dimension of a multi-dimensional view when choosing a new place to live. Culture, environment, climate, proximity to other countries, access to family services plus of course the sailing scene!
Prices can change very quickly - as we’ve seen - so a price-driven decision might unravel equal quickly…

Prices can change very quickly - as we’ve seen - so a price-driven decision might unravel equal quickly… this is very true, and everyone has different drivers to their decision making, there is no perfect solution, just whatever set of compromises suit your requirements. I left Perth because I was becoming bored, the boating scene there is OK for fishing or diving, but sucks for cruising. I had already bought CZ and was commuting to NZ to go sailing. If I just applied cost of living and nice beaches/climate, the state of Bahia in Brazil looks very attractive, but there are err other issues with living in Brazil. The Whitsundays look nice on paper but the one thing that gets me is the SEly never seems to stop blowing in the winter, great if you are racing, not so pleasant cruising. That being said I was perusing this last night shuteharbourmarina.com/The ideal for me, setting aside all the political BS here, summers in NZ and winters somewhere overseas in place(s) a bit warmer.

👍 all that's correct but I don't care !... You know why?…
The most important measure is not the cost of living nor the regulations....
It's all about.....
Better weather
New places to explore.
More variety
Closer to Asia for cheaper holidays.
Better environment to retire.
A better place to waste your money
No negative vibe
fun...
Dot dot dot
I want the next 15 - 20 livable years without...
Maori bullshit
Woke whities pandering to fuckwits.
Cold weather
Muddy river's
I don't care what the pollies do here!... I haven't contributed a cent to the history nor the misery.
I'm here for me and my partner.

We acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work, live and fly.
We pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging.
Cold weather I remember Perth being near freezing in the winter, yes you can follow the sun of course as a free agent. On the other hand most Australian capital cities are stinking hot in the summer and then there is not enough power to run the air conditioningMuddy river's -well that's more than 3/4 of Australian riversI don't care what the pollies do here!... I haven't contributed a cent to the history nor the misery. I'm here for me and my partner. understand where you are coming from and hope it all works out. Hope you have the Gibb River Rd on your itinerary for a winter trip, I spent quite alot of time in the Kimberley's and would rate it is as my favorite travel destination in Australia

I still can not grasp the logic of heading offshore to get this n that reportedly so much better than NZ but then moving to Aussie. That's like saying a Riviera is shot so I'm buying a Maritimo. Same pig just with different lipstick.
Surely if you wanted cheaper than NZ, better climate than NZ, less wankery then NZ, less racism than NZ, a more relaxed life style than NZ, Aussie would be a long way down the list.

All I see when I see comments like yours is someone trying hard to justify their move to themselves as their arguments, like yours, just don't stack up.
Why did you decide to settle for about 20th, being generous, best option when you could have got far more of all your desires if only you'd spent $500 and 4hrs more on the aircraft?
We'll leave your list of desires alone as when I go shooting I don't like targets even the legally blind can nail without breaking a sweat

Just remind me of your justifications for staying in NZ again?....
I don't have to justify my reasons. I just tell the facts and let the deniers jutify thier living in Stalindagrad...
And by the way my choices were Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Aussie...
What made me choose Aussie...
See if you can figure it out 😉

My justifications to stay here? Absolute zero, it's never been a question that's been asked.
You must have justifications by the very nature of your move. Your post is common of those who jump across there, they generally seem more like the person trying to convince themselves using a list of stuff that is very questionable, very.
You choose Aussie as you have a issue with random erections popping up all the time and wanted to be surrounded by the Aussie female accent to ensure it never ever happened again? Good call, that accent is easily the best verbal contraceptive known to man.

Totally wrong G .. ..you may use those reasons for your own excuses not to do something but the only justification I need is what I see and hear every morning I wake up ....
Weather✅
No low brows ✅
Cleaner✅
Friendly helpfull people ✅
No gangs ✅
No loud cars/ motorbikes ✅
Fully open ✅
No one sleeping on streets ✅
No motels full of losers ✅
Better cheaper options for everything except booze
Better economy ✅
Just simply nice ✅
Better infrastructure ✅
No Stalinda ✅✅✅
I cannot see how you can compare NZ slum versus Aussie penthouse without being here right now!… .. then your mad!
Crikey, we are in summer mode, swimming, boating, in shorts and thongs brah!
... Mind you... Some people enjoy misery and pain!

Oh fuck me, Aussie has weather? I read about that in book once.
It's spelt Löwenbräu by the way. I like the way you're picking up the Aussie inability to spell even simple words like beer. I did think for a moment your low brow meant uncouth yobs making arses of themselves but then I remembered you are talking about the worlds most re-known country for low brow yobber and yobbery.
Aussie has an economy as well, bugger me the country that just keeps on giving isn't it.
Cheaper everything is the most classic line every single person uses to justify their move. Yet it is blatantly untrue, always has been and always will be.
Swimming, you must be a hard arse considering it's 0 degrees down south, only 3 by Cairns, snowing in Sydney and Hamo Islands weather was the worst most have ever seen. Now if you were in Auckland last weekend you were swimming and getting sunburnt and if you were in mid northland this weekend you you will have been able to double down on your sunburn and then get bitched at by your Wa who them shows zero sympathy at all, bitch.
But in-between your poorly thought comments I can see why you moved. Politics. It's a viable reason so just be honest about it.
