picking up a theme that Fish started with his Reading a book? what ever next? that must be a lost art, like navigating with a sextant, the sun and the stars....bit like having face to face conversations or taking responsibility for your own actions. What are some of the "almost lost arts" you like to partake in? A past interest I have recently rekindled is dancing - of the the ballroom and rock n roll nature. Alot of fun and a nice social environment. Surprisingly followed by a wide age group, the ballroom classes I go to are mainly in their 20's and 30's, rather younger than me . Where to use it, well the good old country dance halls such as dairyflatlive.com/#gigsbig turn out of all ages - not just "grab a granny"

Playing chess with my son.
Ordering (and picking up) a book from the library. Rather than buying it for $40.
Sitting around the table having family dinner 4-5 times a week.

A couple more:
1. Bbq-img over wood
2. Driving somewhere new, getting lost and resisting the temptation to open Google Maps but instead use observation and common sense to find the way.

on driving - being able to drive a manual gearbox - being able to change a flat tyre (a cop mate of mine mentioned when I was quizzing him about the new cop cars, before they announced the Skodas, said one of the requirements was a full size spare, saying it was a bit of a joke because he said most of the young guys did not know how to change one)

In there with reading a book, made of paper. Don't get a lot of opportunity in the city but in rural it's back and I'm enjoying that.
I've also gone back to wood for the BBQ. Gas is easy but now I've tuned by wood technique it's just about as easy but will a far yummier outcome. Getting more into long and slow with added smoke at times, tricky but the outcome can be beyond spectacular. Eating last evening left over BBQed kofta for brekky.
We brought something we haven't had for decades last week, a bath.
I'm finding in the boonies I'm the sparky, plumber, chippy everything a bit like way back in the day. Loving it even if some council pencil pushers might not be so keen if they have a deep suss. While I legally can't do many things I have, I've done them anyway, after I'm satisfied I can do them safely.
I remember the Dairy Flat hall from way back in the day. One of my best nights there was when a young up and coming band played, it had a great sound and a stunner of a lead singer, an every lads dream one may say. The band was Peking Man and the singer was Margaret Ulrich.

Wood for bbq will give you cancer of your stomach faster than 10 minutes nude at Chernobyl. THAT'S WHY we stopped the stupid practice! . where there is smoke, there may be a carcinogen called benzopyrene. www.epa.gov/burnwise/wood-smoke-and-your-healthEnd!

Straight politicians
Honourable leaders
Milk delivered to your door
Paper bags

Fixing our cars myself is possible . The UK car forums are invaluable and have saved us 1000s in repair bills …..recently put new rear brake rotors and new brake pads all round on a landrover discovery 4 . Total cost $530 and 4 hours work plus an hour of reading about the little quirks and tools needed . Also sorted a handbrake issue on the PHEV also thanks to a UK forum , turns out passenger side rear brake is prone to seizing open so brake only works on one side . Took an hour of manipulating to free it up again and no doubt mega dollars saved on a simple fix .

Reading a report on printed paper, instead of on the screen in pdf, with comments and track changes and all that crazy shit. Like I can just highlight something with an actual highlighter. Or get a red pen and go nuts.
Servicing my own car. Noting both my cars need a service and I'm still working out how to do it. Can't even find the spark plugs on the PHEV.... Used to be able to change the head gasket on my HJ Holden in a day at uni. Probably should have just put a new radiator in so I didn't blow head gaskets so often, but that would have required actual beer tokens, which were scarce and in high demand at the time.
Planning a voyage on a paper chart on the kitchen table, instead of on the laptop. I'm trying to get my kids a bit more engaged in this boating stuff, hence getting the charts out and showing them where everything is.

keeping watch at sea by actually looking out though the windscreens/raising your eyes from the coloured flashing displays, helps minimise radar assisted collisions and GPS assisted groundings
