Last 2 areas for scallops now closed
Emergency closure of Coromandel fishery
Tēnā koe The two remaining open areas in the Coromandel scallop fishery will close following new information showing scallops are in decline. The closure takes effect from Friday 16 December and will prohibit all scallop fishing in the two defined areas at Little Barrier/Te Hauturu-o-Toi and Colville channel. It will be in place for three months and includes commercial, recreational, and customary fishing. The Coromandel scallop fishery is being fully reviewed, with a longer term closure proposed, as part of Fisheries New Zealand’s regular sustainability reviews for the 1 April fishing year. Consultation on proposals will begin on Thursday 15 December. A copy of the Minister's release can be viewed HERE
Please pass this information onto anyone who may be interested.

Ngā mihi Recreational Fisheries - Fisheries New Zealand David Parker couldn't orgnaise a root in a whore house. In the below article he admits that keeping to small parts open while closing the rest of the Gulf was a fucking stupid idea (or, he defends his previous decision). Still, this action, taken with 3 days notice and in such a reactive and urgent manner shows what such a stupid idea it was in the first place. I'd be interested to see some of the actual numbers or details of the recorded decline from these camera surveys. Here is hoping we've got it early enough and this marine heat wave and constant North Easters don't fuck things further. On the constant Nor'Easters, we've been seeing a number of dead pengiuns on our local beaches over the last 2 weeks, Stanmore & Manly. I've seen 3 or 4, and the missus saw 4 on Monday in one go while collecting seaweed after the last blow. They can't handle the wave action from the Nor'Easter (they are only tiny), and just like a spear-fisho, they can't see their dinner in the poor viz. Is sad, they look so tiny and fragile with bright white bellies and cool little flippers, lying dead on the beach. I think in the 11 years we've lived here we've only seen one or two dead penguins total. www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/480657/coromandel-fishery-to-completely-close-after-further-decline-in-scallops

Another one of those venomous tropical sea snakes, found live on Takapuna Beach. Lady court it in a doggy poo bag and told DOC. DOC told her she could be charged with animal cruelty and to put it back... Anyway, I wonder if us sailors will be blamed for these snakes turning up like the carpet weed at the Barrier, the Fan worm and the white heamaroid thing at Kawau and Maharangi? Sooner or later someone might work out its the marine heatwaves and La Nina's with the East Auckland Current bringing this shit down here, and nothing to do with boaties. Our marine environment is changing. Warmer water temp and new invasive species... www.odt.co.nz/news/national/live-venomous-snake-found-auckland-beach?fbclid=IwAR1suBitACV-1u7otWWwqr5W13ipIYtOLB5t1QWXH8xQ_PJunLGJFrHdUjY

Paddle crabs, sea weed, fan worm, etc... If they were carried by the currents they would of shown up 1000s of years ago. Most likely coming in in the holding tanks of ships. Quarantine will get blamed before boat owners do. How many boats do they actually check the hulls of? And the cost of this will get moved to boaties to pay for a haul out and water blast. Snakes are native so they are protected. They have been coming here for 1000s of years in the same currents.

We were walking back after a surf and spotted it on top of a pile of Kelp at the high tide mark . It was still alive but buggered . I’m more concerned about Tiger sharks and bull sharks turning up here . They generally don’t ask questions first and the bulls go miles up rivers into fresh water ….shark attacks in Hamilton would be on the cards for sure

Fiordland water temp expected to be 5 deg warmer than the 25 year average by next week. I'd say that is 'hot'. 18 deg instead of 13... Last year they had kelp die off and sponge bleaching. Fuck knows what will happen this year. Catching snapper for a starter, but bad news for the aquaculture industry as well as the ecosystem. Sometimes I think the Hauraki Gulf will be un-recognisable by the time my kids are my age. I guess one generation ago you could catch hapuka and crays with your eyes shut... nekkminnit... Temperatures off the West Coast today were forecast to reach 4.7C above average for this time of year.
"We have seen these really large anomalies, temperatures way above average. It is peaking now in Stewart Island, but over the next seven days we will see it peak in Fiordland.
"Then, surface temperatures are forecast to reach 18.C, compared to the 13.5C average - a difference of almost 5C."www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/481970/sea-temperatures-rising-rapidly-as-marine-heatwave-hits-lower-south-island

With all the hype before Xmas that "iwi" will have thier fisheries patrol boats out. Did anyone see or come across them?? I didnt but had a visit from real fisheries, good buggers. Asked if they want a fish or 2, yes but we cant and that would mean you caught 8 instead of 7.
They admit under resourced/funded. Band-Aid when you need stitches.

Do the Iwi work in the sort of weather we had over the NY period? Weather was so shit for the peak period I think no one was out and the Iwi wasted a lot of money on boats they couldn't use, gale easterlies for a week between the 2nd and 9th Jan.

Aquaculture can be salmon farming, mussel farming hell even Kingfish, Kina and Paua farming as is happening. Lots of scope to double all of those quite easily, RMA excluded from the easy comment of course. I have little doubt the Greens will be encouraging the expansion of Rainbow Trout based purely on zero knowledge of fish, they will only be seeing the term 'rainbow'
You're lacking details laddie and it's those that make the story...or not.
