If I was the Minister of fishing, in Snapper1 which picks up the H Gulf, I'd make the following rules - minimum 30cm - maximum 42cm - Instant lose of boat and gear on the ramp should any dodgy fish be found. Courts decide if it's given back - Fines that make your eyes water on top of permanent gear lose if found selling any catch - Anyone who complies it's not fair is referred to Rules 27 - Any and all complainers can just fuck right off. (saves using bad language on Telly, just say Rule 27 applies ) - Limit is 1 person up to a maximum of 4 per boat per day. We need minimums and we need a maximum. It's very clear it is the big fish that are causing the problem. As the fishos have taken the big fish out there is nothing to supress the Kina who in turn have slaughtered the kelp and other things baby fish need. DO NOT CATCH BIG FISH if you want your kids to be able to catch fish. Ramp up the penalties for being dodgy. At the moment they are more wet bus ticket so the buggers catching and then selling at the markets or through churches know the odds are in their favour. Change the odds. And as much as I ask about the only argument people come up with for catching the limit is so they can give it away. Admirable idea but the resource is not in a state that can continue and increase as it is. Cut the catch back. When we fish, well mainly the GF who is much keener than me (and provides a very entertaining commentary), we use the biggest hooks possible to discourage the little fellas - those curved back ones - and have a self imposed minimum of ~35cm, the just legal ones are really too small and as long as they are good shape always get chucked back.

The limit of snapper is just right 7 each in sna1 with a combined bag limit of 20 fin fish, taking limit has no effect on numbers or size. Plenty say the big fish are breeders, well they are sort of right, snapper are all female until 2/3yrs old then they balance out.Ask nature how. Snapper mature and best at breding at 3/4yrs old, they are your 30/34cm size. Your 15lbers are lazy, territorial ,swim in either dirction by about 500m,only a handful actually venture away from shelter, you need water temp 18c for them to release roe/milt and can do this several times a yr depending on conditions
Since Nathan Guy back in 2012/13 increased size and reduced bag limit we had several yrs of just under legal now today there is an abundance of snapper 32/40cm. What fisheries didnt do at the time was reduce bag, increase size of other species and these have been fished down. Crayfish are just about extinct in the gulf another forgotten species.
Dont think the problem is the limit more like ,in recc fishing,we tend to lump together rather than spread ourselves out, hieght of summer. 500 fizz fishing motuhihe channel,or gather around flat rock etc. Rememer the days 70/80 Gt Barrier standard snapper 15lb + but with the introduction of trailer boats, bigger vessels, motors etc the Barrier soon got fished down.Nothing to do with commercial.Commercial have slowly been indecline, inshore trawlers there only 4/5 operating in the gulf and not targetting snapper but snapper caught as by catch. The average trawler takes 100/120 snapper per day. Longliners fish inshore and target the 27/30 size snapper for export. Despite what legasea or any other advocacy group blaming commercial, there is around 200k recc fishing the gulf. Trawling takes place in set corridors and fish mid water unless targeting bottom dwellers. You would be surprised how far up the water column you will find snapper,30m water, fish in the 20/15m zone surprise . Its a shared fishery and the Minister must allow for recc/customary then comm in that order on any species

Something that does have an effect on the snapper fishery is Barotrauma. NiWA conducted a 1/2 arse test in sub 20m and got good results, snapper survived but the didnt go as far the aussies did and got poor release results. NIWA www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOA7GTXz5xYAussies fishingworld.com.au/videos/how-to-videos/video-barotrauma-in-golden-snapper/Some say different fish but the principle is the same, legal keep it,limit your catch Do not vent the fish by puting a needle in to release air, only a qualified vet can do that as Matt Watson found out, that pratice is illegal in NZ
