Except for CZ with his Musk-machine.😊 CZ had the appearance of an internet cafe at times, friends in the cockpit and cabin with laptops, multiple phones etc getting their downloads. One day heard a slight noise and looked over the side to see one of our mates tied alongside getting his downloads in his dinghy . Most of the boats we saw carrying Starlink (GF likes to play spot the Dishy) so far are cruising yachts, expect next summer alot more locals will have it who need to stay on line for work and/or their/their kids inability to be offline for more than 1 hour. We did notice Vodafone/2 Deg service was somewhat better around Fitzroy/Port Abercrombie, Spark still sucks in that area.

An important part of cruising is being flexible with your plans. Ours was to head north this week, but did not quite work out. Left Sandspit Tuesday afternoon for Kawau with the intention of catching the brisk southerly northwards on Wednesday. However on arrival at Mansion House Bay the autopilot started alarming "No Pilot", Raymarine's answer to a locked screen on a PC. Had a good look at all the cabling and connections but no apparent problems. Did the switch off and on again test but still alarming on both control heads. Switched off and left it for a couple of hours then on again. Soon after the principal control head alarmed but the secondary head (older version, works thru a Sea Talk converter which caused us a problem going to Vanuatu) continued to function and control the AP. Talked to Lusty's tech mgr, he thinks a comms problem. Decided to defer going north and cruise locally for the next 10 days and if the problem occurs again not too inconvenient. Spent 2 nights in Bon Accord, walked Mansion Hse to Copper Mine and back, kayaked around the top of Bon Accord and dinner last night at KBC. In Sullivans Bay for the Classic regatta and on Sunday will head in Waiheke's direction keeping any eye on the forecast unsettled weather. So far AP problem has not occurred again, I need to get all the software updated which is a pain as I do not have a Ray MFD.

I’ve had similar problem. L&B thought most likely too low voltage at aft end of network where A/P head is. My head unit also died so recently replaced it. To date it has performed better but still had the same message 1-2 times. So I’m now going to add voltage booster to aft part of network and see if that helps. I’ve already got cable just need to find a day to clear out cockpit locker, climb in and make some connections.

Interesting, where will you connect the new power cable - at the ACU or the connector block? Apart from the issue I have now, and the converter block problem going to Vanuatu, the installation has been faultless for the last 5 years.

You can boost the voltage anywhere along the network by simply adding a 12v supply to any of the connector blocks, using a Red & Black power cable.

How many of you guys have a back-up AP? As in a separate redundant system? With the criticality for short handed sailing, and the amount of electronics and electro-mechanical components in the marine environment faults and failure are fairly much inevitable.
I've got an under deck hydraulic AP on my tiller. I've managed to break it 2 or 3 times. Also have an old raymarine tiller pilot, although it doesn't actually go at the moment.
To cover me for 'those' situations I've made up a spear gun bungy system tied to some braid. Hooks back to existing clamshell cleats either side of the cockpit allowing me to control rudder angle easily.
Obviously a gun-bungy type system is far easier with tiller steering. Cost for a redundant system wont be cheap, but AP's have to be the leading cause of issues for short handed crews, and almost all cruisers are shorthanded these days.

In the picture below - of my actual network under the helm station - see the connector block. The blue & black cables joining at each end of the block are the network spine. The white & black cables are the data spurs to connect individual instruments - you can see I have two here, one of the being the A/P. In the spare unused white socket I will plug in a Red & Black power cable that will boost the network voltage at this part of the network. I will simply plug the Red & Black cable into the spare white socket and connect the bare ends to a 12v supply I will tap into somewhere back there eg a compass light. Apparently this the next easiest thing to try when having intermittent issues like this.
