Enjoying breakfast anchored at the very calm Whangapoua north end, it is really nice to see boats of all shapes and sizes overnighting here, ranging from several fizz boats (a 6m Senator pontoon and a 6m Haines the smallest, not my idea of cruising comfort but good on them) up to the 25m Golden Opus and the bi pod mast Catbird Suite with a cross section of all sorts of boats in between launches of all descriptions (altho only 1 Riv), what looks like a home build power cat "Already Gone", and 60's sedan launch, quite a few sail AWB's and cats, the well known Kailua (Farr 42), Runaway Bay (Lidgard 12.5) and at the sub 12m group Pahi (S34), Townson Daydream & another GRP T34, and an old Pacific 38. Just shows that you do not need to have a $M boat to be out here enjoying yourself.

A lot of the 6 to 7m fizz boats are coming fully fitted out with a separate head and gas hobs and small sink. At least they're out there doing it. The part that gets me is that they are all $200k plus. I guess the running costs are nothing compared to a launch.

Yep we were in by waikawau two days ago and there were two 6m tinnies that had come up from pauanui. They'd overnighted in Kennedy bay the first day, then stayed that night in stony bay after grabbing a couple of crays from a free dive. Saw them heading back the day after. Both had wives and little kids on board. Bloody awesome. We're bottom end of mercs now,my fav bay was full so had to settle for ti tree. i.postimg.cc/N0pTH5GR/20240104-164142.jpg

A lot of the 6 to 7m fizz boats are coming fully fitted out with a separate head and gas hobs and small sink. At least they're out there doing it. The part that gets me is that they are all $200k plus. I guess the running costs are nothing compared to a launch. $200k just seems to be the starting point for the 7m+ tinnys, friend has a new Surtees 7.5 which I reckon he got no change out of $300k, then next step up www.fishingboatsnz.co.nz/boat-listings/surtees-800-game-fisher-2023/then you need a serious tow rig for one of these, towing weight of 3400kg needs a US pick up or a truck, not a Ford Ranger or equivalent, unsafe in my view regardless of tow rating.

You're right CZ. The towing weight is bloody huge on some of the big Glass boats. That's why I only went small so I didn't have to buy another car.

Was just in at peachgrove (now named - the zoo) discussing sealegs with a mate, said the one in front of us would be $200k at a stab, but it would have been $300 new. Jeesus wept... Girl at works partner got a ~9m trailer boat a couple years, ago, it was north of $400k and he bought the 'merican chev to tow it which was another $180k from memory.

That's why I only went small so I didn't have to buy another car. my 16ft glasscraft 90hp 50lt fuel on a heavy duty trailer,all up weight 950kg,put on work scales unhitched from car,subaru 3lt all wheel drive outback,200kg over rating but nzta allow up to 2000kg non braked,only requirement stop at 30kph within 7 m Nephew dumped his Stabicraft for a senator,both 1850,totally different vessels,Senator handles a lot better and quieter. Think Stabi is there due to Matt Watson tv promoting them. Want a headache,saw back yep go in a stabi,they thump rather than ride over waves

Much nicer since that rule came in and it's not a carpark. Another guy in here in a 7m Haines hunter tonight, drove down from akl, topped up with 90l diesel in the bay, down to tairua, 70kg marlin by himself down towards mayor, back into tairua to weigh it. Now in here for the night before working his way back to akl chasing snapper. He was saying the water out the back of the mercs was 22/23 deg. 21.6 in here tonight which is much warmer than the 19 in ti tree last night.

And they say sailors are rich pricks ? ! Funny thing about fizzies is when you look at trademe,they turn over relativily quick,meanwhile yachts seem to take eternity . Picking cost v marina v insurance,maintaince and usage,cheaper to keep 300k in the bachyard,time restraints. I use mine about every 2 weeks on average fuel cots $30 + car fuel both use 95 . I dont travel far for fish unless I want to do a cooks tour. Tutukaka trip in a week will be expensive,1 trip will be 100lts chasing a marlin or not in my case,yet to see one let alone catch one, 2005 90hp mariner/merc 2s on average costs 25lt for 21 miles,nephews new 4s 120hp evinrude 15lts . But new motor cost $19k price of a good yacht

Also there is the possibility if you were in an accident where the trailer exceeded the manufacturer's specifications braking/all up weight wise, then the insurance company could deny the claim. The rule to stop within 7m from 30kmh is not as easy as it sounds, saw a video of this years ago and it was very difficult to achieve, even with override brakes. Have you ever tried it with your rig? On towing capacities, John Cadogan has quite a bit to say (as usual) about all the medium weight utes and their 3500kg ratings
