Jacinda mk2 ..,. But not as cunning. He won't last. his first presser was a non event. He came to a shootout with a lollipop... Un prepared and no statement of intent.
He should have had a speech prepped but not organized!

Yep another groomed socialist from the WEF stable. Unlikely to see much change in policy direction but probably not as good on the spin so should be easy pickings for any journo's actually doing their job.

I actually think Labour will get a lift in the polls, and Hipkins has more political street cred than Luxon.
He doesn't have all the negative baggage of Adern, but has a more quiet, competent persona. Note I'm not saying he is competent, but he does have the reputation as 'Mr Fix-It', and is easily, head and shoulders the most competent MP Labour has.
The "Boy from the Hutt", will resonate with a lot of Labour core, and middle NZ. Noting Fatty Robinson is still in Finance, so no dramatic changes there (it is beyond me who else in Labour even knows how to spell Finance).
Hipkins calm and experience may well give Labour the platform to have a descent go at the election. Of course that is highly dependent on policy positions and how the campaign goes, but Labour have actually quaterised the septic puss filled sore that was Adern's lying and toxic reputation. If Labour drop the TVNZ / RNZ merger (complete distraction) and soften the co-governance elements of 3 waters, do a bit of a rinse and repeat policy position reset, they may well get a sufficient lift to be a contender in the election. All they need is a coalition partner or two (greens and ti parti maori) and it is game on.
So, I reckon you guys are blowing your load way too soon. Luxon has a legit competition now. There are big portions of the Country that will lap up Hipkins...

bryce says Get ready for a major political reset once Chris Hipkins is sworn in as Prime Minister this week. Labour’s new leader is likely to push the Government to the right economically, and do his best to jettison the damaging perceptions that Labour has become “too woke” on social issues. Overall, Hipkins’ goal will be to ruthlessly drag his colleagues into line with the average voter.
According to Hooton, “Chris Hipkins will take Labour back to its old sleeves rolled up, practical Kiwi image”. He says that Labour will try to present Hipkins as more about delivery than speeches and visions: “Labour strategists have talked about needing to transition away from the old St Jacinda of Covid brand towards a good-old, sleeves-rolled-up, practical Kiwi image.
pollster David Farrar says: “So 2020 Labour voters want the new PM to drop Three Waters, the state media merger, expanding co-governance and the reduction in speed limits.
This will be a good indicator of how pragmatic the new Prime Minister is
Martyn Bradbury has optimistically written that: “Chippie is to the right of the party and will need to throw the Left a sop for their loyalty – so expect free dental, or free public transport or free lunches in schools as an early pledge.”
Similarly, others are raising the question of whether Hipkins will put a capital gains tax or other progressive wealth taxes back on the agenda.
Having a woman of colour as part of the leadership combo is essential for Labour. But they also need to balance out Hipkin’s Wellington roots – and Sepuloni represents a working-class west Auckland electorate.

i agree he was there and agreeing with everything last year
now this year he will try to convince all that he's "new chippy" a changed man
but if he wins this year, he'll go right back to being old chippy asap
in my book he has as much credibility as winston
that is to say, none at all...we already know who he really is
and a smart new suit won't change the inner man
what's he going to do in 9 months?
fix the housing crisis?
stop the crime wave?
make the kids smarter?
heal the health system?
pass a bill of rights guaranteeing all nz'ers equality?
or just weasel out more words
blaming old chris and st.jacinda and begging for more time and money
while he certainly will be begging for more time and money
there'll be no mea culpa or blaming st.jacinda
...
in the end he's just a seat-warmer until the election bloodbath
when labour can continue their search for an even better woke-poster than jacinda
who'll also think governing is just ideological sloganeering and ordering people, without tools or plans, to pursue her dreams

The main thing with Chippie is he is not toxic and polarising like Adern. He doesn't have that baggage. On the covid front, a lot of people agreed with the mandates and think Adern was a saint. Those sentiments are echoed with Chippie, cause he has the profile of managing the Covid podiums of truth. Most people have a memory of less than about 5 min when it comes to politics. And saying he is about as credibly is Winston is pointless. It is like saying he is a politician. Duh. Probably the biggest advantage Chippie has is he already knows how to make a govt work. How to navigate the Ministries and the Bueacrates. Luxon still thinks he can sack anyone that doesn't perform, like in Industry. Nekkminit he's tied up in quango-talk. This article sums up the lye of the land well with Chippie. A new hope? So is there a dream scenario for Labour? With Ardern's charismatic - and now rather polarising - personality heading for the exit, the party could turn things around. New leadership licences a significant cabinet reshuffle and (more importantly) a refresh of policy. Labour could now neutralise (or even dump) some policy proposals that are presently causing public dissatisfaction. Rather than Hipkins having somehow to fill Ardern's shoes, he could follow his own path in his own trusty trainers. An advantage he has is an apparent unanimity of support from his caucus. This suggests his team is focused on beating National rather than beating one another. But can Labour win back the support of those middle-ground voters who've shifted to the centre-right? It appears many of those who've swung away from Labour actually liked Ardern. And Ardern remained on top in preferred prime minister polls right up until days before she resigned. We could infer from this that a leadership change on its own won't suffice to woo these voters back. The loss of Ardern could indeed precipitate a further drop in polling for Labour. A policy reset Late in 2022, Ardern had stated that the government's focus this year would be the economy. And National will inevitably use the line that they (National) are the more competent when it comes to "managing the economy". If Labour is serious about winning the 2023 election, then, they need to convince enough voters of the following: they are addressing the real economic concerns that are affecting people presently they have taken heed of people's disquiet over some current policy changes and are prepared to revise them and they are not going any further with controversial matters, especially co-governance with Māori, without first seeking a wider public understanding and consensus. Hipkins is a competent and reliable person. If he has his party's backing to revise or backtrack on policy, then he may have some success. With less focus on personalities this time around, his best hope may be to convince people his government is serious about resetting the country's direction. www.rnz.co.nz/news/on-the-inside/482871/chris-hipkins-becomes-nz-s-new-prime-minister-there-are-two-ways-it-can-go-from-here

the vast majority of the swing-voters who gave their votes to jacinda last time now feel BADLY burned
all those women, largely uninterested in politics, who voted for labour in 2020 just because they could identify with jacinda
won't be identifying with chippy
he has to actually deliver some MAJOR pluses in the next 9 months to make up for 5 years of broken promises that he was partially responsible for
take the messes in education and health
they and their bureaucratic dreamers have largely broken the old systems of merit and replaced them with a system of mediocracy ..........who even knows what NZCA? is or even means anymore?
will a lick of new paint make it sensible?, will it suddenly turn our literate, numerate, sophisticated young consumers of digital content?
after spending so many years going backwards can chippy just slam the box into forward and make up for that lost time?
will he snap his fingers and those truant kids stealing cars and smashing shops will suddenly get good parents, grades, jobs etc and become productive citizens?
are the inherent flaws in wokism even repairable?
can labour even admit they've dragged us down a dead-end?
because if they haven't worked out yet they've gone down the wrong path
they won't be walking back to find out where they branched
i don't think the anger with labour's governance over the last 5 years can be solved by just dialing back the speed of all the changes they are wedded to
the whole current crop need to go
and in while labour circles in exile
a new crew need to come up with convincing new ideas AND WORKABLE, COSTED PLANS
before many of jacinda's swing-voters will have gotten over their biggest ever voting mistake

Eri has it right.
Did chippie ever challenge any of Cindys/ mahutas crap. Nope!
Will he change 3 Waters, co governance. nope!
Will he pick the best deputy or a tick box Brown woman. Nope
He's not a leaders asshole!
He is Ardern 2.0 with less spin, organisational skills, and not cunning enough. He didn't even prepare a speech at his first presser! He had all the press there and was not prepared, had no positional statement, and did not put his stake in the ground. A bit lame if you ask me. He missed a big opportunity to make a great fist impression. He looks tired and overwhelmed to be fair. He's a tick box person out in as a sacrificial lamb by caucus to make room for a Maori.
He confirmed Grunta fat bastard as finance minister then said he was not in a position to say anything until confirm. ...bullshitting from day one. He's just another loonie with a less harsh face!
Why did nobody else get put up.?... Maori caucus are waiting.
If people swing to labours bad policies because of dripkins then NZ is truly fucked and full of stupid Morons who are glutens for punishment

If you won't vote and let the politicians know which direction you want the centre to move
Your desires will be unknown and so ignored
Ranting and raving on social media will them know a little, but if you don't care enough to vote they won't care enough to change

Epic fail at the very first step of 'a major political reset'. Good riddance labour, you've wasted 5 years of our lives so far, and now with a chance to do something decent by choosing a competent 2IC you barge straight ahead with the diversity box ticking bullshit and put one of the most incompetent ministers in as deputy. They're completely and utterly detached from reality. I hope it's a landslide defeat.
