Pretty whacky photo . I’m guessing they got a shroud hooked up on another boat ? Sweet baby Jesus. That would explain why they didn't have a crack at fixing it and catching the fleet up at Mongonui. |

Ross 930 Start Me Up was the other boat involved.
They damaged their prod and some minor hull damage (described as not sinking and not very structural).
They removed their prod and are hoping their shore crew can bend it straight again and refit it at Maunganui.
No details on how the incident occurred. I suspect that is both a touchy matter and best not discussed in public just yet.

From Vixen, gutting and concerning:
The #rni2023 dream is over before it really began. After a glamour first day (albeit with no water ballast from mid arvo) Scott had a bad fall landing on his back and unable to move. Dropped him to Marsden Point at 2am to an ambo and currently on route to Gulf Harbour pondering what might have been. Thanks Tash Fickling for a stellar support crew mobilisation.

Was a Port Starboard, many of us saw it happen, the right boat was able to continue racing. We got permission from the RO and took off the prod as they went up the northern bays. They also have some structural work to do as the hull was breached. Needs fixing from going over the top. But dont think this was to bad. Start Me Ups prod is now repaired and heading north.... and we decided that its paint job wasnt up to scratch, so we painted it pink for them. They're going to LOVE it ![]()  |

Back to Vixen, the boat used to be Buckley Systems and was raced by Ross and Campbell Field in the 2011-12 Global Ocean Race. A two handed round the world race for Class 40 boats.
In Leg 3, going upwind in the Southern Ocean east of NZ, Ross suffered a serious back injury.
They had to withdraw and returned to NZ for urgent medical attention.
The incident sounds similar in basic description to this current incident, going upwind and a serious back injury. I wonder if the two guys fell from the same point and landed on the same thing?
I remember the Global Ocean Race incident, as the RO imposed a gate in theory to protect boats from either ice or bad weather. However the timing of the imposition and the location of the gate meant that Buckley Systems had to go to windward, which the crew complained was substantially more dangerous than the risk the RO was trying to protect them from.
I've never sailed on one of these boats, but they are as wide as a UFO. If it were a house build, when heeled over going to windward, you'd need scaffolding, fall arrest harnesses and safety nets to get from the hatch to the tiller...

So after a mixed bag on leg one not to far from monganui charging the batteries our motor suffered a water pump seizure and damaged the motor so we have had to withdraw and will head down to opua hopefully get it repaired so we can get home
