New Zealand faces the challenge of rebuilding the areas devastated by the cyclone and upgrading our crumbling infrastructure. Based on their record of non delivery to date I have zero faith that the current muppets in government or the underperforming directors and CEO's of the various government agencies have the ability to do this. Then there is the funding issue, the government and most local government is effectively broke, only being kept afloat by squeezing the taxpayer/ratepayer for more and more. The first small step on funding is not to spend 1 more cent on all the BS activities currently on the go, no more cycle paths, no more spending on the non existent tram track and so many others. This article highlights a serious bleed that needs to be stopped on the principle of "Charity begins at home" thebfd.co.nz/2023/02/17/climate-change-monies-needed-at-home/opens - If Cyclone Gabrielle has taught us anything it is that when it comes to so-called climate change or global warming, charity begins at home. It’s past time we stopped trying to save the world (which we can’t) and looked at the crises we have in our own backyard. These crises should be top of the government’s priorities. Most have been caused by either government action or inaction. They are:
Electricity supply
Antiquated pipes and drains
Banning oil and gas exploration
Closing Marsden Point
Lack of road maintenance
Wasteful spending
There are others. The above were the first six that came to mind.
The first thing we need to do is to exit the Paris Climate Accord. New Zealand has pledged to give $1.4 billion a year from 2017 to 2027. That is $14 billion. This to a talkfest where the left elite congregates to talk about reducing climate emissions. The irony is most have flown in and out in their private jets thereby adding to the emissions. Where does this money go? What is it used for? Does anyone know? Funding this nonsense has to stop.

The line "antiquated pipes and drains" demonstrates the need for 3 waters reform. Just saying. That is, of course, completely separate to co-governance. There has always been a need for 3 waters reforms. It is a tragedy that the urgently needed reform has been hijacked by niggers trying to get their snout into a bigger trough.
Then, the lack of road maintenance. What has happened here? John Key's government allowed the gross weight of trucks to increase. Was it 36t to 42t? HT should be able to confirm. Nekkminit the roads are fucked. Exactly what everyone said would happen if you allow heavier loads on them. Simple cause and effect.
That doesn't have anything to do with 18 bridges getting washed away though, and the Napier - Taupo rd being destroyed. That may have more to do with slash dams building up then bursting with tidal waves downstream.
But yes, a fucking cycle way isn't much help in Gisbourne right now...
The only power into Gisbourne is from a hydro scheme in Waikariamoana. Built maybe a century ago, pre RMA and pre Iwi consultation. As far as I know it was effectively mothballed as it was so old. There are lessons to be learnt there.
Even my Green Party member and ex candidate has conceded his car is fuck all use when the power goes off.
We are going to need a paradigm shift in how we get shit done in this country. The first step in speeding it up will be to skip the fucken Karakia at the start and end of each meeting!

Could not agree more!. The other major issue we face is lack of resources, machines, labour (skilled and trades) and materials. How are you going to attract skilled people who have left the country back? Or will they be replaced with Filipino (hard workers), Chinese and Pakistani labour just to name a few. As I am sure you know at the professional end of engineering and construction we are similarly very short of skilled people. on the trucks, in fact an HPMV can exceed 50t subject to length and number of axles www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/vehicle-types/vehicle-classes-and-standards/vehicle-dimensions-and-mass/high-productivity-motor-vehicles/As you say HT will be able to tell us how it works

I've been dwelling on this problem for a while now - basically who's going to do the (much needed) work in this country? a few months back i had to contract out some work to a local engineering firm with clear and detailed instructions , on arrival at the company it became apparent the guys that were going to do the work were a couple of blokes probably late 60's early seventies ... the boss said the younger guys weren't really suitable for anything too demanding. then driving home dodging potholes and going through untold roadworks , some of which were being completely re-done for the second time within 3 weeks , i got to thinking this country has got f...ng huge problems and there is no-one to save it. What to do??? We almost need to cancel the rma for a few years and give the military a stack of bulldozers and dynamite then tell them to get to it - no consultation needed ...

NZ is fiscally and morally bankrupt.
The billions that should have been spent on infrastructure, health, Education, crime, etc has been wasted on unnecessary greens, Maori, Gay, lesbians, bulshit.
The politicians have lost their way and lost focus on what is important and needed v luxuries and wanted!
This country's has $210 billion of infrastructure projects outstanding before these disasters.
This will go into trillion $ statue soon.
Politicians are responsible for this catastrophe.
Shoot the lot and put in a think-tank of NZs best people to run this country try,. Now!

Having driven on 100s of km of Gautamalan and some El Salvadorean roads NZs are embarrassing.
Been chatting to many from the EU who watched NZ during the pandemic responce. That response has trashed NZs reputation as a sane place far more than I realised. Many who had NZ on their radar have now removed it.
Ive yet to find anyone who whos what a Aoteaora is and Ive been asking a lot, nany who are traverlers who often tend to be more up in things like that. 3 who had no idea are Aussies.
NZ Govt/s have lost the ability to recognise the difference between need and want.

Covid wasn't the problem! Ardern and Bloomfield were the problem,
Their over zealous response ruined Nuevo Zealand

When you prioritise arty, cultural, spiritual, ideological (like cycleways) expenditure over water supply,wastewater/sewerage,stormwater ,roadind/maintenance it's astounding the number of people who are complaining about what's happened. They apparently can't comprehend that with natural events its not if, but when. You don't need an art gallery or a cycleway, library, marae if you haven't got water coming and going.

The first step in speeding it up will be to skip the fucken Karakia at the start and end of each meeting! Or just get the fucken Karakia over and done with quickly so it doesn't become a 6 month intense discussion/argument that in the end achieves nothing except to drive people, that could be working together, further apart.

I 100% agree with the sentiment here but very sadly, I genuinely don’t believe that the effort required to fix everything is worth the return.
Which is why I’m plotting my exit from NZ.

If you're not part of the solution and can't be arsed working to be part of it then yip, it's time to uproots.
Best of luck finding a country that meets your needs. Let us know which one you choose.
The world seems fucked.

After being here for 20yrs and contributing 20yrs x 200 days per year = 4,000 days of professional effort into the NZ system PLUS another $3m+ income tax, I reckon I’ve already made a respectable contribution to being “part of the solution”.
And I reckon I’m totally entitled to call time and say that if, after 20 yrs, NZ still can’t get its act together, then I’m entitled to bow out and still have an opinion.

Cam Slater's view on some of the BS spending the government should be cutting to fund the rebuild thebfd.co.nz/2023/02/20/time-to-swing-the-axe-on-government-spending/The government has promised many big ticket items in coming years and that is all going to have to fall by the wayside as we start to look at replacing roading from Coromandel to the Hawke’s Bay, housing hundreds if not thousands of families who will need to be relocated from land that never should have had houses on it in the first place, replacing critical infrastructure to facilitate transport and communications and alleviating the immediate suffering of people displaced by the cyclone.Things are going to have to be cancelled.I hope Wayne Brown is going to have a discussion like this with AC's departments, especially AT
