Skipper of ferry hurt, off to hospital. Everyone else OK. Ferry on bottom. Did the ferry sink? Looks damaged but floating? Good photo of the offending boat. Ferry impacted on port side. Good luck explaining that away My Fizz Boat. Wonder if he will get as much as Charles St'Clair-Brown?

Apparently the ferry skipper is in a critical condition. That is sad/ bad. Ferry sunk later at the wharf (hardly surprising).

Fuck ! An American built trophy is not something you want coming through your wheel house .
That’s seriously incompetent helming if you think about it . Must have had a massive lapse of concentration not a momentary nut scratch …or pissed .
Best wishes to the ferry skipper .

Not surprised given the high traffic volumes around there. Only surprise us time of year not exactly peak summer. Looks like Wayne Brown holding the line in this pic.

Reports that the ferry skipper has now died. Gutting. Shocking. Initial reports were that he had a serious head injury, but main concerns were for a spinal injury. He was transfered onto a Paragliding boat that happened to have 2 Dr's onboard, using a door off the ferry as a stretcher. Then flown to Middlemore. 70 yr old guy that ran the ferry solo, skippering, parking, tying up, loading, unloading... The below line from the Stuff story is worrying... The spokesperson said police were also calling for witnesses to the incident to get in touch, along with anyone who saw “a vessel being driven erratically” earlier in the day.www.stuff.co.nz/national/300852964/appeal-for-witnesses-after-collision-sinks-ferry-in-bay-of-islands-with-person-critically-injured

That’s tragic , from the response I’ve seen on social media he was valued member of the community and well liked .
From this point forward I’m going to be even more Italian in my hand hand gestures at power boats that break the rules . Tradies in fizz boats on boys days out are my pet peeve , closely followed by pornstaches in collared shirts on ugly imported launches .

My statement was copied from social media and not MSM.

Yeah and reported 2 x 300 hp outboards. If thats true then even I who is violently opposed to licensing / registration would call for some form of regulation restricting hp . From the damage to Waitere it looks more like a trawler hit her. Autopilot maybe involved ? Any update on skipper? Friendly helpful guy making an honest living and a great service.

Apparently call for registration,Start with compulsary "day skippr" basic rules etc.No improvement then rego.
Did boat master in 1987,not a lot changed except AK harbour buoy system alphabet to numbers. "A" buoy stayed "A" buoy
Wonder what the charges will be??failure to give way, keep proper look out, excessive speed.accident causing injury(so far) pentalty??

Assuming the fault is clearly and unambiguously found to lie with the pleasure boat, then I would dearly love this guy to made an example of and for every book in the legal library to be thrown at him.
If we end up seeing some form of registration happen then we’ll just have to wear it. And hoping any new framework is risk-based and therefore aimed primary towards the fastest / most powerful pleasure boats.

Mine will do 35mph and things happen fast, but cruise at 25 mph and very aware of other vessels, you see it at the ramps, launch and open it up with no regard to rules of 200m within the foreshore, its like they drive there car,got to get there,no indication change lanes.Shit and they have legal licence to do that on the rd.

Not good and those involved are shaken and have been told not to talk to the media. From those on the water the fizz boat is highly likely to go for a ride and if all is true i hope he does. The laws are there we don't need a license.
