Classic. East Coast harbour master calls for boats to be registered to owners. A 55t 18m 1950's trawler was abandoned at sea (skipper, crew and dog winched off by rescue helo). Was heading from Auckland to The Sounds. Washed up on a beach north of Gisbourne. Regional Council waited 6 months then spent $11k removing and dumping it - which sounds like a bargain to me. Apparently there was nothing of value on the boat, as it has all been looted. But can't find the owner to post him the bill. Police have given up looking for the owner. Surprised it has anything to do with the police, being a civil matter. And reading the background of the owner, I'm not sure how the harbour master expects to get any money out of him? Back in the old days, they just would have left it where it was. I'm not sure what the benefit of spending money moving it was? www.rnz.co.nz/news/ldr/488283/no-sign-of-abandoned-boat-owner-one-year-after-vessel-washed-up
