According to a news report today,24% of retailers will of shut the doors in the next 12 months.
Online shopping from overseas will be having an effect.
Needed a rear motor mount for a car. NZ $450 and wait 24 days. Nope ordered direct from the USA $150 nzd and arrived 3 days. So retailers need to sharpen pencils a bit,had it been an extra $20/30 may of said yes to NZ supplier. Not paying 3 x times the price.

They are buried under an avalanche of rules, requirements and compliance. The spiralling food prices are being driven by govt initiatives. Fart taxes, council compliance, fertiliser storage assessments, Lefty-poof-tree-hugging-vegetarian rules for chickens fart space (meaning eggs have gone stratospheric in cost). Customs inspection & biosecurity costs for everything crossing the border. Worksafe BS, ever increasing minimum wage. Traffic congestion making it impossible to get anywhere on time, or move product. But yeah, if you can get things cheaper and faster mail order, go ahead. It would be silly not to.

To add, the implication that retailers need to sharpen their pencil is that they are making substantial / excessive profits. My understanding is the majority of owner operator retailers make less than the minimum wage, when they work out their money divided by the hours they put in.
Oh, and I forgot to mention retail crime. Ramraids, or just the good old five-finger-discounts.

Bed bath and beyond files for bankruptcy Any liquidation sales? Its the US one not the NZ one. They use the same name but that's it.
Not that will stop the NZ muppets who have the same intelligence level of those who stopped drinking Corona out of fear of catching the virus.

The amount of gear from closing down places is noticeably large and increasing.
I'm a little confused. Aren't you the one calling for higher wages yet your actions actively work against that happening. You call for more nurse and teachers yet again you work actively against that happening. You call for lower prices in what is a volume game yet again you work actively against that happening.

You import right?? So stop importing and start getting NZ manufacturers to make your gear. Cost slightly more but then higher wages would offset that,we dont pay enough taxes here to support nurses/teachers.. Why would I ant to pay 3 x times the amount from a kiwi company when I get for a 1/3 from overseas in less time? Wait till june/july when the petrol subsidy ends then you will see prices rocket in supermarkets. And more retail fails. Volume is the answer. sell 100 items for a small margin or 1 item with a huge margin that sits on the shelf, turn over is the answer.

It won't be a big heap before you run into GST and/or duty and the admin costs associated with those. Then there is packaging cost, then labour to repackage, then Trade Me tax, then income tax just to name a few headline costs. If you net $10 per hour I'll be impressed.
No need to stop importing, there is a bigger need for rose tinted glasses removal procedures though;)
I import personally, I did only an hour ago. But I'm selective in how I do it and it only happens if I can't get it here, within reason.

Not even to mention his guarantees he has to give under the various NZ laws such as the CGA. I have so much free shit from Trademe Buy Now. I love credit cards. Product does not work or does not meet advertised expectations. Boom - instant refund. The vendor doesn't even want the stuff back. Most recent full refund was $900 for a set of motorcar fibreglass bumpers and side skirts, a "saving" of $1800 on a NZ company. Small crack due to shipping, sent off the photos, vendor refused to acknowledge, I filed for a charge back, money is in my account. Vendor has finally told me to dispose of the items how I see fit - $50 repair which I did myself and you can't even tell...

www.newshub.co.nz/home/money/2023/05/price-battle-how-new-zealand-s-grocery-prices-compare-to-rest-of-the-world.htmlAn interesting piece. A month ago we did find the US expensive overall. We attacked a large 'outlet mall' and even there things were generally more than in NZ. Bigger ranges and in spots better quality but bugger all we thought was a good deal or bargain. We did a massive hunting and fishing shop. Again far bigger range, if you included now banned guns in NZ but smaller if you didnt, and the prices were very comparable to NZ. Ammo was cheaper especially if you brought the deals which were generally 5000 round at a time. Fishing gear again very comparable. Shop set up and displays made ours look like shit but then one reckoned it cost 3 mill to do the inside, that's a lot of reels needing to be sold to pay for pretty. Chatting to Aussie mate last night and they have just sold their rental due to taxes around it and over all costs meaning the ROI was just not worth the drama. But I did hear some numbers this morning that suggested the UK doing OK prices wise, which does line up with the news thing. Everytime I come back after a trip it takes a wee while to forget how insular NZers and their thinking can be.

curious about this comment, I have had a rental in Australia(Perth) 25 yrs now, and briefly rented out a house here, and it is far simpler in Australia than the current NZ laws tenant wise. Only downside is the Capital Gains Tax liability if I ever sell it.

He also mentioned maintenance costs.
Perth isn't in Aussie, mind you neither is any other state if you talk to a local Like Texans and Alaskans are not Americans.
Not unlike people in Takapuna/The Bays etc are not Aucklanders
