Bryce Edwards’ Political Roundup: Voters have sent a very strong signal, but will Central Government listen? The results of the local government elections will be very difficult to process for the political left.
It was the “change candidates” who prospered throughout the country, with a rising mood of anger and disenchantment with the status quo. And so outgoing Dunedin Mayor Aaron Hawkins, who ran as a Green Party candidate, complained he was a victim of an anti-Establishment mood that was sweeping the country. The so-called “woke mayor” lost in a landslide against him.
Leftwing commentator Martyn Bradbury isn’t optimistic that the political left will draw any sensible lessons from the big defeats of the local elections: “The ramifications of the Left being smashed so badly should be a wake up call for the Left but it won’t.” He argues that they will focus instead on the victory of Tory Whanau, which he explains by the fact that “Wellington is the wokest city in NZ”.
Bradbury thinks the left will therefore double down on woke policies instead of going back to leftwing basics. He concludes: “The Left have spent far too much time talking and very little walking. Voters don’t believe we have the capacity to make transformational change any longer and are drifting back to the Right.” eveningreport.nz/2022/10/10/bryce-edwards-political-roundup-voters-have-sent-a-very-strong-signal-but-will-central-government-listen/

this is a comment from Kiwiblog this morning, I think it well sums up public sentiment
They can try and polish the turd as much as they like but I think it’s to late. There is a visceral deep anger in our society. A cold calculating anger. We have been lied to on an unimaginable scale. Our bodily autonomy lost, mandates, illogical lock downs, crazy medical policies. Now as a country we are facing divisive racist, civil war inducing ideas. I’ve never seen or felt such seething pent up feelings. Everyone I speak to feels the same way. Five years ago New Zealand as we then mostly called it was an open, progressive, benign but beautiful little country. We welcomed everyone, tourists, immigrants, there was a buzz about our amazing success. We had the best resorts, amazing cuisine, fantastic hospitality. Our citizens travelled the world, our reputation was amazingly good. Five years of divisive, authoritarian, totalitarian, racist, illogical, and finally fear driven policies have broken our spirit. Everything is worsening, worsened, going backwards. Hope that used to spring in the hearts of our young is gone. We are living in a wasteland of broken people, broken homes, ruined lives, mental health crisis’s, the list goes on. The leadership has been atrocious, Ardern a brutal race bating dictator, an evil woman. Chippy Hippy the face of destruction of your kids education, the hapless and divisive Māori caucus. Incompetent, lacking in empathy, authoritarian, and ultimately cruel. What they did to our fellow citizens at parliament earlier this year, a stain on our society. We have an separate health system for Māori. We have the incredible three waters. The list of failure, hapless incompetence, gross racism against the majority, hateful speech and policies, and contempt for us the people is getting longer every day. Crime is out of control, children roam the streets unsupervised, shops have to put Cindy blocks in front to stop teenage ram raiders. New Zealand has become a post apolitical wasteland. It’s is indeed ironic that mad max was based down under. There is no hope for this rabble of second, third and forth rate grifters known as the Labour pardy. Fellow electors and citizens, we must send them a message, and message that will resonate and echo through time. Vote them out and consign these people to the political oblivion. Remember our target less than 20% but less than 10% better. Vote them out forever!

it's been clear for 20? years that auckland needed 'infrastructure' like a second harbour crossing but unfortunately brown's terms as mayor of the supercity were based on pork-barrel promises of more services to south auckland, paid by northshore ratesand then when brown had $hat in the nest too often, goff continued to harvest the southern vote at the expense of vital infrastructure and when he saw everything was starting to break he fled www.1news.co.nz/2023/07/02/strong-winds-could-close-akl-harbour-bridge-for-most-of-monday/ wellington will get much the same and while the beneficiaries scream for more support the squeezed middle will, as always under leftists, be forced to pay for their mistakes
