and appears to have done so only 2 years ago?
So as long as I can remember the Maori name for Auckland was Akarana. Now it seems the name is Tāmaki Makaurau.
But go to Te Aka, the Maori Dictionary and you'll see that reckon Tāmaki Makaurau is Maori for University of Auckland up until 2021. There is no other translation. Suss all translations and you get either Auckland Uni or Auckland Polytech.
Except for Google translate which says the translation is Auckland.
If the Maori have never called Auckland Tāmaki Makaurau before but did use Akarana a lot why isn't Akarana being used now?
And they wonder why so many see stuff like this and think WTF?

I think we need to change your handle to GO30 P.I.
Do you have a ‘tash and a red 308 to go with that too?

Maybe it's cause no-one wants to be associated with a white elitist yacht club? Even if that yacht club was bestowed the Maori name for the city it is in.

The above was sparked by a comment, a near passing type one, in news article. The rest was 2 mins of sussing. It's got me right confused it has.
The good news is... there is no good news. There is plenty of good news. It all depends on your attitude, that'll lead you to what you want to find. Try changing yours and see what happens.

Akarana or Tamaki Makaurau? www.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_say_%27Welcome_to_Auckland%27_in_MaoriAkarana is the English transliteration of Auckland however the ancient name of Auckland is Tamaki-makaurau. Buggered if I know ,bit like this Matariki bullshit another Labour fuck up. Why would you celebrate a group of stars which is suppose to bring good food from land/sea etc, would it not make more sense to be the start of spring when things grow and fish spawn?? Bit like christmas in summer yet jesus was born in summer, the star of bethlemham appears in april/may not december. When did the Star of Bethlehem appear when Jesus was born? Thus the latest date for the Magi to have seen the `star' at Bethlehem was April 6 plus 70 days, i.e. June I 5, and the latest date for the birth of Jesus is this date minus 6 weeks, i.e. May 4.

I don't change anything bro? I just improve everything, Thats the problem with kiwis... always changing things but never improving anything. You idjits have 2 options... change your political system before it completely ruins your low brow country or leave for a better quality life. I've improved my life immensely. You guys just fill a sailing forum with the crap forced on you by your government. Just look at the content of this site's threads and see how pathetic you and your country has become. This is a sailing site that 100% bags NZ ( and rightly so) and you guys want to stay there... in a place that is expensive, racist, dangerous, in debt, living beyond its means, and divided... bravo!🙄... you guys get what you deserve! Carry on! ...It's fun watching your stupidity as 7 of you confirm your stupidity on a daily basis without make one bit of difference

Hmmmm... a totally unqualified answer that one though. It appears to come from a Wiki and they are very prone to manipulation.
Hence when sussing a Maori word you'd tend to think non-radical agenda ridden Maori are more reliable i.e. I'd tend to think the Maori Dictionary is more accurate than a random on the interweb. It maybe the case but there is nothing of any authority I can find that supports that. The fact the actual Maori Dictionary states Tamaki Makaurau meant Auckland Uni 'up until 2021' would strongly suggest the meaning of Tamaki Makaurau has changed in the couple of years.
That's a very accurate response

That's a very accurate response Always knew Auckland as Akarana, not this Tamaki Makaurau bull shit,Tamaki Makaurau till recently was used to describe Glen Innes area. appears i am correct Te Rāwhiti o Tāmaki Makaurau East Auckland (Māori: Te Rāwhiti o Tāmaki Makaurau) is one of the major geographical regions of Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand. Settled in the 14th century, the area is part of the traditional lands of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki.

It does appear Akarana was broken down even more and when you consider most movement was by foot you would need to break a larger area into smaller, just like we have with suburbs today.

It does seem strange we have to ensure we have words for places to ensure we don;t forget history................ even if the words now used are only very very new.
I had a shit fight with my car GPS the other day. Trying to get to Albany and the fucker keep wanting to take me to Ta Ake or some place named like that, most fucking irritating. As it pans out that place is the name for the new motorway. So I'm guessing last month the Maori Dictionary grew by at least one word.

The Chinese didn't have planes either, let alone a word for them... For that matter the English didn't have planes either when they created a word for them. What about Helicopter? Based on your logic the word shouldn't exist... All languages change with the times.

Without trying too hard the earliest reference I could find was a 1961 record from NZ parliament which states that:
Tamaki Makaurau is the Maori name for the Auckland Isthmus.
