well ive been lurking for months but only tonight pulled the pin..
anyhoo... it was a post about distilling that got me inspired... i too distill... but more on that later.
im also in the market for a trailer sailer.. preferably larger, suited for some lads to take to Stewart Island for a week sort of size. Budget is tight but the perfect boat surely is just over the horizon.
Im based in Southland andf am an old grumpy geezer....

Hi phish, the perfect boat aye ... I believe you've got quite a hardy bunch in the Southland Trailer Yacht Squadron down there (often sailing out of riverton?). I have a feeling quite a few Trailer Sailers wouldn't fit the bill sailing that part of the world. Keep us up to date with your quest if you like ...

hehehe.... yeah, sorry i see what i did there..... ( i can dream that my perfect boat is just up the road and will be for sale in 2 weeks tho, right?)
Riverton was my home port when i had my powerboat but now i think either fortrose or bluff would suit better....
ive got a wee mac360 which i run out of fortrose.... its a bit exciting if there is a swell running on the bar for sure!!

Ya learn something new everyday, isn't that awesome.
Never heard of Fortrose before so just had a suss. Interesting spot and close to some big fish I'd think but gezz it looks like an area you either respect well or it'll kill ya. Only been to Invercargill/Bluff once (Did Chch to Inver a few hrs before some Aussie Ahole let loose on a pile of muslims) and I did very much like the place, I must get back there. Awesome part of the country to be on 2 wheels.
A Ross780. Good size that can take 4 adults well and can be quickish so easier to zip back and forth in smaller weather windows.

I believe the boat you are looking for is a McGregor 26 . It will do 25 knots on all points of sail with the code4 deployed

MacGregor 26s have their devotees (1000s were produced) but their high freeboard, shallow draft and light ballast means they should be used with great caution in the open ocean.
But in their favour the ability to plane at 20kts+ when the need arises gives you more options to get out & back again safely within a narrower weather window.

I know this forum embraces free speech and all, but are you guys really talking up McGregor's?!?
That sort of language would get you banned from any other sailing forum. But, each to their own...

I have only met one Mcgregor owner and by met I mean I seen him a number of times at the boat ramp and on the lake. Never once seen the sails up. He always avoided eye contact, looked pissed off and seemed to be in a big hurry. He seemed very well suited to a Mcgregor.
On the other hand that Trojan looks like the ducks nuts. I have had the pleasure of sailing on one a couple of times. They sail well, very solid and roomy down below. Arguably better than a N25 on all accounts and half the price.

On a more serious note , Gazelles are similar to Trojans . Both boats are approaching 2 ton and built like tanks . Thing to look out for on both boats is the keel/centreboard , they are steel plate and if rusty they will be a prick to raise and lower . Farr 7500 is similar and a better sailing boat but the rigs are more light weight .
Theirs is a Trojan group on Facebook called Trojan 750 squadron with plenty of good info and pics .

Was over at Hamilton Island a few years ago the week before race week. Couldn't believe my eyes when all these McGregor 26,s turned up. Bloody near had their own division. Just confirms Muldoons theory about Aussie.
