Mayor Wayne Brown can be particularly caustic with his put downs and one-liners during Council debates. But some of them are gold. This one below is worth a read:
Auckland Council's Transport and Infrastructure Committee on Thursday rejected the previous government's $56 billion plan for transport tunnels underneath Waitematā Harbour.
The preferred option listed in the indicative business case for the Waitematā Harbour Connections project involved two underwater tunnels, one for traffic and one for light rail, to run alongside the Harbour Bridge.
Mayor Wayne Brown said there was no possible way the $56b plan would survive a cost-benefit analysis. "With the size of our economy, it's a wonder that grown up people who can feed themselves and walk could come up with such a stupid number."

He's such a disappointment. Name one that isn't.
The City is fucked and even a legend would struggle to make a significant difference in 3 years let alone a single dude who has the bureaucracy working against him. But I am told by some inside the organisation he is good to deal with and really does want to get things done.
But for telling it as he see's it and for great one-liners Wayne is easily the best we've had since the Supershitty was excreted into existence.

Here is a good one liner from the CTU General Secretary on new Employment Relations Minister Brooke van Velden: "Putting an extreme libertarian ACT minister in charge of Workplace Relations and Safety is like putting a vampire in charge of the country's emergency blood supply," he said in a media release. At least BvV's reply to the radical leftist was a bit less emotive: Van Velden raised her eyebrows when that quote was put to her. "I certainly don't think that's helpful. But look, respect goes both ways. I start all new relationships with a foundation of respect and in good faith. So I would hope that that comes back to me too." Remember that throughout the election campaign it was the CTU that was leading with the attack ads. www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/504414/workplace-relations-minister-brooke-van-velden-less-certain-of-good-relationship-with-unions

Winston Peters was PM today. Newshub have compiled a list of his one-liners. There are many. The guy could do stand up comedy. PS I don't think it is great that our House of Representatives spends more time trading insults than the average sailing forum. I think they should grow up. But in the meantime, here they are: Peters was back for a spin in the big chair as acting Prime Minister, but haunted by the ghosts of Winston Peters past. The Opposition lined up with statements Peters had previously made, including when he was a minister in the previous Government. "Does he agree with the then-deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters when he said that the oil and gas ban 'makes sense'," asked Marama Davidson. Peters replied to one of the questions saying, "that quote from one of the brightest guys that have ever come to this Parliament". "Don't shout out like a bunch of clowns at university," he said at one point.
"Don't just carry on like a bigoted lefty shill."
"No, on the marae Megan you keep quiet."
"Woke idiotic left ideals."
"When the handbrake left, what a mess they were."
"Words matter Mr [Robertson] not just gobbledegook." His most savage was saved for Te Pati Māori. At first he declined to answer their question, which was asked in te reo Māori, unless Rawiri Waititi translated it for him. "He can tell me in English or he can [inaudible]," Peters said. "The people who are watching on television also are part of this parliamentary debate, that's what a democracy is called. It's not just about 5 percent, it's about the other 95 percent as well. It's called one people, one country." It should be noted - there was a translation provided on Parliament TV - and there was a translation available in earpieces for MPs. But Peters doubled down. Asked if he wouldn't answer questions if they were in te reo Māori, Peters said: "Would you just follow the facts for a change, I did answer a question, didn't I." When it was put to him that he didn't initially, Peters said: "No, no. The translation was really slow. The people out there listening were not getting the information they should have got." Waititi called it a "disgrace", while Te Pati Māori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer said he was a "perfect example of a colonesian". A very eventful temporary turn at the top. www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2023/12/winston-peters-sprays-insults-in-parliament-initially-refuses-to-answer-question-asked-in-te-reo-m-ori.html

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Jones, a New Zealand First MP, said that "mining is coming back".
"We most certainly need those rare earth minerals. In those areas called the Department of Conservation (DOC) estate, where it's stewardship land, stewardship land is not DOC land, and if there is a mineral, if there is a mining opportunity and it's impeded by a blind frog, goodbye, Freddy."

Te Pati Māori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer said he was a "perfect example of a colonesian".What she really meant is that he's the wrong kind of Maori, she just didn't have the cajooles to say it.

yes, her handlers have probably told her she can't use the known racist terms of "uncle tom", or "plastic-maori"
so she's had to resort to some new made-up word to imply that jones is somehow less maori than she is
i wonder how many white skeletons she has in her heritage?

'The paper is incoherent' Wayne Brown on Eke Punuku's paper to change the longterm plan so they can turn the Auckland Fishmarket into apartments for private interests. “The paper is incoherent and lists authors who didn’t write it. And I’m not in favour of accepting poorly written and incoherent papers,” Brown said. Bit of a kick in the nuts for Punuku. Although I doubt they'd care. You have to wonder at the quality of advice our officials get when they can't even name the write authors on reports. www.stuff.co.nz/business/133459248/the-paper-is-incoherent-mayor-puts-auckland-fish-market-sale-discussion-on-ice

going to be an interesting contrast between auckland, with brown the experienced old engineer signing things off
and wellington, with the progressive choice of a young identity-politician, still finding her feet

What the feck? Govt doesn't pay rates? Can you imagine Phil Goof or Efeso Collins calling this shit out?
Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown calls for Govt to pay half billion dollar rates bill:
Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown is calling on the government to cough up almost half a billion dollars, which would otherwise be in the council’s pocket if the government wasn’t exempt from paying rates.
The mayor said Aucklanders were not getting a fair deal, with the region missing out on $36 million of annual income.
“Why should central government get a free ride? They use our infrastructure but don’t pay the bill.”
Auckland households could save an average of $506.40 in the 2024-2025 financial year should the money be returned to Aucklanders.

You seriously think making central govt pay rates will help us? Need I point out that we already pay for central govt. And if you make them pay rates you simply add to their cost base and they will charge it back to us taxpayers PLUS a processing cost. So we will be worse off. This is the ultimate example of shuffling wooden dollars around pretending it will make us more productive. Rubbish idea. Focus energies on more productive efforts!

This is the ultimate example of shuffling wooden dollars around pretending it will make us more productive. Rubbish idea. Focus energies on more productive efforts! No kidding. Two things would happen. 1) the collective country would pay for the infrastructure used by govt buildings, instead of one city. That would be a more appropriate distribution of cost and responsibility. 2) If the true cost of govt activities / buildings is clear, the govt 'may' become more efficient with it's activities. It is clear that if they don't even see the cost of their activities, let alone pay for them, they won't ever become more efficient. The main thing that surprised me is that I didn't know govt didn't pay rates. I do know in Opotiki not paying rates on Maori land is a major issue (had a meeting with the Council CE where she brought it up). It accounts for something like 40-50% of their income (which they don't get).
