Easter weekend in the Gulf looking cold, wet & windy… did I read that right? That changed quick from this time last night. Big contrast between Predict and Windy A week ago windy had the same forecast they have now, then it changed to a more user friendly setting until last night when they changed back to the original setting. Kids have no skool Tues so might take the day off and head out Monday. Unless it changes again...

Ive been asked to go for a puka/bluenose trip out to the 400m off manukau. Normally refuse to go as been once and not my thing, but this was to be with a very experienced skipper,ex trawlerman

Easter weekend in the Gulf looking cold, wet & windy… did I read that right? Yes. I've been meaning to start an Easter Weather thread but this will do. Been watching the forecasts all week and was looking unsettled until at least mid Easter, with a major cold snap. As per other comments, forecast deteriorated significantly last night. Just looking pants now. My pick is it's too close to the equinox, which was either last Wed (sun over the equator) or Sunday, night and day both 12 hours for Auckland. Noting there are always gales around the equinox. Normally my pick for Easter weather is either a minging storm, or amazeballs glassy calm, it never seems to be anything in between. But in saying that Easter has recently been later in April, away from the equinox. That might favour those cracking, clear and glassy calm days with cold nights. Interestingly, I found out who they schedule Easter the other day. It is on the first Sunday on or after the first full moon after the equinox. PS, got my portable boat diesel heater out today, fresh fuel in the can and ran it up to make sure it is working good, in preparation for an Easter or April school holidays cruise. Really hoping for some of that autumn cracking clear calm day with freezing nights. Got the heater so we can enjoy the days and not freeze after sundown.

I haven’t ruled it out entirely.
If you can brave the rain on Friday to get into an anchorage sheltered from the S/SW, then Sat & Sun look windy and cool but at least clear & sunny. Could be a good time for egg-hunts and family board-games onboard etc.
Then Monday back home the SW looks lighter.
One to watch…

Ive been sussing every morning and evening for whats Easter is expecting. Its been changing each time which suggests lots of instability out there. But this morning its gone back to what it was saying on Sun/Mon. Mostly likey wet, possibly a few big bits and with wind, again possibly with some big bits. Luckily I have a kitchen to install in our rural love shack so theres a wet day job. Sadly the others include installation of solar water pump, running 800m of pipe and the stream cleaning/small lake building continues. Sorry no lakes, that shoukd be RMA exempt lilly gardens

One to watch… Your boat is a bit bigger and more comfortable to accommodate bored kids on a wet day by the sounds ;-) We don't have to be back till Tuesday, and the weather might settle a bit later in the piece, but we also have the whole of the April school holidays available for boating, so I'm not too desperate to push it with the Easter weather. Hoping we will get one of those classic autumn blocking highs at some stage over the school holidays.

we have had a great summer's sailing, over 70 days afloat, so fortunately not feeling any pressure to venture out. Besides the garden needs some maintenance after a long period of neglect

Definitely been worth going out in Bay of Islands. Just had one of my smoothest nights anchored in a SW, new spot looked good on chart. Winds offshore so whole bay is flat. Caught snapper about 2min after moving off this morning, stopped fishing 10min later, caught enough. Trying a new anchorage again now, looks as good as last night's. Suns out most of the time, it's warm. Pretty sure I'm getting paid for today too HT.
