It’s just different now.
Previously when the MetService said 15-20 you got gusts of 20ish.
But now it’s all just higher - the sea state today was not 15-20 it was steady 30. We motored straight into it for an hour to get an angle then turned left and pulled the job for a sail to Waiheke.
A 12-14m displacement launch appeared behind us and sat in our flattened wake for 30 mins then turned off as we did.
I can’t recall such a prolonged period of unsettled weather.

This feels like regular equinox to me. It is always just blowey around the equinox. Often for a couple of weeks. Not sure about the metservice accuracy, but I know this weather has been doing my head in. Went to the boat yesterday to do some jobs, expected it to be a cold southerly. Turns out it was calm and very hot. Wore trackies and a t-shirt, was sweltering, needed to be in shorts. Today was hot in the sun, windy and cold as soon as the sun went away. So much for the cold southerly, basically a hot day with shorts and summer shirt. Whilst the forecasts were looking promising we decided to flag trying to go anywhere on the boat over Easter, and I have set about removing the windows for replacement. The plan is to have a few maintenance jobs ticked off so I can do my insurance suvery, and target the April school holidays for a cruise. We won't have that time pressure Easter has, it will be further away from the equinox, and I'm banking on some of that cracking autumn weather / blue-bird days. If its cold, we have my portable diesel heater. Will be dark earlier, but that shouldn't affect our day time activities or routine at all. Might even help get the kids to bed ontime.

The changeable conditions haven’t put many off.
Oneroa is like a zoo - proper peak summer level of boats buzzing around.
Only difference is less in-water activity as sea temps cool down. Which suits me fine 😊

Photos never do it justice but it was howling with a decent wind chop. At 6kts we had spray flying metres up the rigging, over the dodger & bimini etc. Today the whole boat is caked in salt - even the davits are covered. I haven’t bothered rinsing it I’ll wait til I get back to the marina.

Still as here now and heavy grey clouds starting to build. It's got that sort of spooky feeling going on.
The forecast for today is on track so far. We use the Dargie forecast but know our weird micro climate can often mean we only see Dargie weather off in the distance.

Yesterday turned into a real summery day for a while, was hunting for shade as we motorsailed home. Some friends from Ireland were here so we did a little jaunt from Onetangi to Garden Cove. Like good fold fresh out of the northern winter/spring they jumped straight in the water. Like good kiwis, we sat on the beach and watched...

NZ Cretservice strikes yet again. The difference between the so-called forecast and the reality is dangerous. It’s misinformation to predict 10-15 when it turns out 21-32.
