Made it back to wet & windy Auck airport.
Surprised to discover the biggest potential risk to arriving home on time turned to be a global IT outage rather than weather!
Luckily Emirates ops appear to have been totally unaffected.

Ohakea is on the list if a big plane gets desparate - seldom has fog and 2 1/2 km of runway Yeap, it has been the primary divert for heavies into Auckland for donkeys years. An A380 can land at Ohakea but it can't take off again, it has the same problem as Whenapai, the runway is too short. Again one probably could if it was empty.
The plates show OH longest runway 09/27 at 2440m and 15/33 at 2133m (with an unknown surface which is a little strange). WP 03/21 at 2031m.
I think these days CH is the primary divert for most. For heavies coming south to NZ a divert from AA to CH would only mean delaying decent a literally only few minutes so not really a biggie. Sorting the passengers and getting the aircraft back would be the arse part.
As Fish mentioned CH is always manned where OH and WP aren't, I'd expect that would be a significant input.

Back to weather, holy crap did it rain last night. We have flooding everywhere and one neighbour is 50% under water. My stream cleaning stopped most on ours ,Ya Hoo!! it worked, but there is still a lot standing in some paddocks. Fecking loud as well with the only thing between our ears and the rain is one sheet of tin. It seemed as if we spent the night inside a big drum.

Word has it the same team who designed the Brynderwunn 'improvements' also did H&S for Ocean Gate and security systems for Trump rallys.

I see Metservice have spotted a severe thunderstorm on the radar and issued a warning at 9:21am, positioned west coast of Tai Tokerau, just above Dargaville. I reckon the weather gods know exactly where GO30 is, and they're after him...
This below is an updated warning: Severe Thunderstorm Warning Area: Kaipara, Far North and Whangarei Forecast: At 10:07 am, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near PUNAKITERE. These severe thunderstorms are moving towards the east, and are expected to lie near KAIKOHE, MOEREWA, AWARUA, NGAWHA SPRINGS, OPAHI, RAWENE and KOHUKOHU at 10:37 am and near KAWAKAWA, TOWAI, NUKUTAWHITI, AWARUA and PUNAKITERE at 11:07 am. These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by damaging wind gusts. Impact: Very strong wind gusts can break branches from trees, damage roofing, and make driving hazardous especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

But 12.40 now and been raining since 10ish, not heavy but heavy enough. Just finished the last 20m of stream clean on the flats in all that wet, so that's good. While maxed out yesterday we didn't get the flooding we would have otherwise so happy happy. Winds nothing to worry about as there is almost none. Sky looks a little angry and there is lots of rising so it unstable and I could see thunderstorms popping up. But the wet is stopping now and the sky is breaking so maybe that was it.
Heading back to concrete this arvo, got some exciting work shit to sort.
Oh its got suddenly a lot brighter but looking up still sees unstable and angry.

well it is not just NZ where the weather forecast can differ from reality. We have just pulled out of Sitka Alaska, heading south for Vancouver Island. According to Windy we have 11kts SW, according to the ships anemometer we have 40kts SE. Still, after a 747 or similar, a 90,000t ship (Queen Elizabeth) with 35 MW worth of diesel electric azipod drives (total generating capacity from 6 MAK engines is 66MW, half the power is required for "hotel" load) makes a pretty good job of punching into it at 18kts, just a bit of a roll at time and the odd thump when the bulb smacks a wave as the bow drops. Certainly not enough to spill the wine at dinner
