Apparently the Cook Straight Ferry Aratere has ran aground. In the sounds.
Doesn't appear to be in the media yet.

Only a matter of time.
Meanwhile MNZ more concerned about the safety of Cat 1 yachts sailing to Fiji than commercial vessels.
Only in NZ.

Fortunately seems to be a rare calm night in the sounds with winds < 10kts.

This is why Kiwirail can't have nice stuff.
Bluebridge aren't in the media pranging boats and fucking things up like Kiwirail, yet most of the country think there is only one Cook Straight ferry operator.
There is a large bunch of unionists still bitching blue murder about Nicola canning the iRex upgrade. Imagine if we put all our eggs in one basket with just two iRex ferries and they go and prang one of them - noting they would barely fit through Tory channel. Noting brand new ships have teething and reliability problems as much as poorly maintained ships. (The theory being with new ships is once you get past the teething issues they are reliable for a few years).

So they just 'upgraded' the steering gear last month. Then sent an email yesterday to commercial customers all about the upgrade and wet-dock management. They reported bugs in the software of the new steering controller... I'm curious to know why it was doing freight only, was it cause they were testing systems they knew they had trouble with? The email, seen by Stuff, said it was great to have the ferry back in service “following an upgrade to the steering system during the ship’s wet dock last month”. “Like all system upgrades where new software is meshed with existing mechanical systems it was not without its challenges with plenty of unknowns. Our software experts needed to run several patches to get the system working exactly as it should. “Thank you all for your patience during this time. We learned some lessons for our upcoming maintenance programmes. In particular - to communicate early and clearly about our planned maintenance programme and to communicate project milestones, being clearer about when we will be certain about a return to service.” The email said that several times they thought “we were there”, but found further tweaks were needed after final testing protocols. “We know that was hugely disruptive for your businesses. We know we need to do better to enable you to plan with certainty for your customers. Thanks again for sticking with as we got this piece of work done - an important investment for Aratere’s future.” www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/350319741/interislander-emails-customers-about-aratere-faults-and-fixes-day-it-runs-aground

Realistically wouldn't you want to get their tech people to stand aside and go right through that boat even if it takes a month or two and sort out all glitches lurking onboard... Funded by sacking the ceo and half the board. it's only a matter of time we'll commenting on something much more serious

And I believe if the "Wahine", If didnt have a fully enclosed bridge (no wings), the captain could've gone outside and felt full force and he would never of entered Wellington.

Ships lose steering and other shit every day and all over the world. Lets us suss why before we spend 2 billion dollars on a replacement that will be out dated before the keel is even laid. Luckily it has been noticed the Kiwirail desires were very 1985 not 2040's as they should be so wasting 2 billion a pop is far less likely now.

Luckily it has been noticed the Kiwirail desires were very 1985 not 2040's as they should be so wasting 2 billion a pop is far less likely now. That they upgraded the steering last month and lost steering causing the grounding would suggest, very clearly, that the age of the ship had nothing to do with this grounding. The crazy unionists, Labour, even Helen Clarke are bitching nonstop that Nicola cancelled the new ships. That narrative, rather than that Kiwirail couldn't scope or put a business case for a root in a whore house is the one the left are hanging on to. I am bemused at the level of politics around basic infrastructure questions. As far as I can tell it's all to do with rail verse road freight, which is some sort of 1950's indoctrination rather than any objective logic. If Kiwirail can't demonstrate any competence in asset management and planned maintenance regimes, would you give them $3billion of new shit? That Kaitaki near grounding, that was cause they didn't know the age of a $150 rubber expansion joint. I would expect that every nut, bolt and gasket on those vessels to be in a database with item life and planned renewal dates. It appears they rely in the ships engineers to go round checking stuff and replacing it if they feel like it.

As soon as captain realised no steering, why not shove in to reverse?? or is it a total electronic fuck up on all systems? was only doing 3knts so had time to drop anchors.
