Just got told the full story on the Manawanui. Shocking! Will probably never be disclosed. There was no loss of power. The ship hit the reef tearing a slot in the hull like the titanic. It ruptured the fuel tanks. The ship listed. They lowered liferafts in the fuel covered water. Total clusterfuck Why am I not surprised?

He has caught up with mates who were on the Manawanui, but was very very circumspect about giving any indication of what actually happened. To be fair I've only recently met him and trying to get him to spill the beans was a bit like going for a home run on a first date, but anyway, the crew and the wider navy are under strict orders not to say a word. So good work on finding out. I am fully expecting a cover up. Our first female Minister of Defense has already told two blatant lies about it. First being the area they were in wasn't surveyed since 1983, and that this implied this might have changed with earthquakes and volcanoes etc. But the area the ship sunk was surveyed in 2011, by, err, LINZ... The second being that it wasn't leaking oil. Samoa said it was, and low and behold their divers found the leaks, while our divers said 'everything is fine'. The govt would have known what happened within minutes, certainly once the crew were back and debriefed. For them to not mention the basics, or at a high level what happened indicates a strong desire to kick the can as far down the road as possible and bury it in a long winded enquiry.

Did your informant divulge what the hell they were doing there?
No, not his area. But when you think of it, it all adds up. The ship turned on its side, caught fire and sunk within minutes. Steel ships that drift unpowered onto reefs don't do that. Ships that slice their guts open do, think Lermentov, Costa Concordia, and yeah, Titanic

What is mind blowing is that she was given command without having followed the tradition established of 100's of years in the naval/commercial world of serving as first mate/first officer/XO before being given a command. That is where potential captains are trained and assessed for their suitability as captains before being given command, if they get one. Rightly so there will be alot of nervousness in navy high command who allowed/encouraged her appointment.
On a bit of thread drift I had a boss many years ago who was an ex RN Commander (Engineering), ie chief engineer. His last posting was on the Hermes at the Falklands, decided after that to look for something where someone was not trying to poke an Exocet down your funnel. he must have had the appropriate deck qualifications as well because he said occasionally the captain would call him to dock the ship, I expect "evolutions" such as this were rotated amongst the officers to prepare for worst event where some were disabled in action.
