Deck Saloon yachts are now very much in vogue and one of my requirements if I replace CZ with another yacht (instead of going to the darkside) would be for a deck saloon where you can see out the windows. The other day I was admiring a very tidy John Gladden yacht named Winterlude. Most do not know or have forgotten he was building "deck saloon" type yachts in the 60's and 70's, typified by his roomy little 26's such as The queen of the Gladden fleet was Mary-Terese, built for Murray Ross' parents, currently for sale www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/boats-marine/yachts/keeler/listing/4493666407When Murray's parents decided to upgrade in the early 80's, he designed the 44' Matia II for them, also a centreboarder like Mary-Terese. She was superbly built by Kerry Alexander and when launched had a huge (for a yacht of that type) horizontal 6 cyl perkins (since replaced with a Yanmar) under the saloon floor offset by the centrecase. It must have been taken out in pieces to extract it for the engine changeover. I knew Murray's brother in law so had a good tour of her after launching. Matia II came up for sale last year, unfortunately did not get a chance to look at her again at the time.

That Ohms is massive for a 26fter. I'm told it's owned by Bevan Keys the DJ dude. I didn't see him there but then I saw none of you either.

Mr 9 got a book from the boat books stand (they know me there very well) on how to tie knots. He has the bowline mastered, I'm hoping he will get across some more. He was very excited to complete the figure 8 by himself on Saturday night. I didn't see any knot tying in the hall, worried I missed something very cool. Especially with mention of monkey's fists and Stockholm tar.

Opposite side to Boat Books, by Waldo of Calibre Sails fame by that absolute stunning, massive under statement, Chris Craft EV build by Bill Buckley I had a knot on the table, many actually but this one in particular. A kid who can't have been much more than 6 maybe 7 saw it and told his dad 'That's a sheepshank'. I thought WTF? and said to him 'OK smart arse what is it for?',he replied 'Shortening long ropes'. I said to dad 'that's impressive, is he doing Cubs or Scouts?,'Nope he's just fascinated with rope'. I offered him a job on the spot. After a wee chat we decided he'll ring me once he finished school. That kid was the only one all weekend that could name it without hesitation but then only a handful could. For every one that could 10 asked what it was

Must have just missed you.

Caballero is under offer already. I think that is a week and a half on the market? Or perhaps 2 and a half weeks? Spoke to the broker on Saturday and was going to go have a look on the way to the Wooden Boat Festival, but the traffic was banked up on Westhaven Drive, so went straight to the festival. Then Mr 9 was super enjoying the Festival and we didn't leave until 5:45 pm so didn't get to Busfields on Sat. Weren't open on Sunday. Was pondering going into the city during the week and see, yip, under offer already. Noting I would have had to have sorted out what to do with my current boat if I was going to get serious about this one. What is that ancient curse? "May you won more than one boat?"

Engine is original, with about 5,000 hours ish (maybe a bit under). It isn't re-engined (like my quality Birdsal) but not a show stopper. Doesn't actually have holding tanks, which I would like (has an electra-san thing on one head and nothing on the other). Those two points were the only detracting points I could find when sussing. Otherwise every other aspect was mint. Would even fit on my current mooring. Grrr, I'm going to have to stop talking about this...

A mate of mine had a good look at Cab a year or so ago when she was on the market for $210k ish. He was in the market for a boat just like her and in fact finished up buying Caper. (the Rob Rowden Townson with the strange windows). He said it appeared very little maintenance had been done to her since she was bought from the original owner. Not sure if she sold at that time or if was taken off the market.

She was taken off the market and given a tidy up. Health issues are obviously behind this short blip in Cabs’ otherwise gleaming maintenance history. Was talking to original owner / builder yesterday and it sounds like Cabs might have now sold. What doesn’t come across in the advert is her sailing abilities. Even the broker admitted he was surprised by her turn of speed during a recent delivery trip from GH to Westhaven sales berth. The original owner was a performance sailor and had Roger Hill design Cabs to that brief. Big but solid rig. Fast & slippery underwater profile and modern foils tweaked a few years after initial launch. Meanwhile, something different but interesting in a different way: www.trademe.co.nz/trade-me-motors/boats-marine/yachts/keeler/auction-4603971735.htm

Obviously different era's, but similar sized day boats of outstanding attractiveness.
