in a similar vein it is interesting the number of younger woman single handers we have met in Vanuatu there is Holly on Gecko (previously mentioned here), altho latest gos is boyfriend/chef on Uhuru is jumping ship and they will buy something a bit bigger
Olivia on Juniper
and a Japanese girl on a old 10m Brice Kirby designed yacht she had sailed from Japan to the Sth Pacific (can't find any links on her)

Yeah Holly is the girl we met and helped a bit when she was here in NZ. Great value. I bought her a new mainsheet & block as a leaving present because hers was on its last legs and thought it would match her new mainsail!
She’s buddy boating with Olivia this season. Olivia is also cool bit slightly further along the ‘out there’ spectrum than Holly, who is quite methodical & rational by comparison. They probably make a great match as buddy-boaters!

One owner since 1982 is a long time, more likely stayed in the same family, replaced a 45' Mummery designed launch they had built in the early 70's, also by McM & W. Solid yacht but slow as, I remember years ago talking to someone who had crewed on her, said she did not sail very well and did not motor very well but got along OK motorsailing.

Surprised it doesn’t motor well with 2x 130hp engines!

one of these condomaran monstrosities pulled into Kuto Bay yesterday afternoon, we watched it pitching and rolling around as it motored into 20-25kt headwind No doubt it is supremely comfortable at anchor and I would be very happy to have Euro2-3M to spend on a boat. But for crossing oceans, no thanks. I can only imagine what it would be like to be bounced around on that flybridge (fully enclosed by canvas/clears) in some of the seaways we have been in. The only way it would go to windward is under motor. What you can't see is the very low wing deck clearance, it would pound like hell. These boats have to wait for the wind to be aft of the beam to make a passage. My view if you want a cat for offshore work it needs to something like one of Ron Given's (eg Katoa2 visiting New Cal or Norma and Oro who reside here) or Roger Hill's designs, or in the production world something like a Catana or an Outremer (or H & H, Balances etc if you have deep pockets).

Every boat has compromises between sailing ability, practicality, comfort and budget however looking at that boom height over the flybridge tells me that sailing ability wasn't even mentioned in the design brief. If you have that little taste and that much money why even bother with a mast? It's actually quite upsetting just to look at it 🤣🤣

Imagine doing that at sea. The orange bit is some idiot putting the main away . Sorry about quality, but had to get a picture and original file size wouldn't load.

this is what friends had to say about their recent passage between New Caledonia and Australia on their flybridge Lagoon 450 cat
"It was certainly fast – we covered 187nm in one day, which must be close to our personal best in heavy seas. I can’t say I enjoyed it though – it was all very stressful. The wind never really dropped below 20kts and probably averaged closer to 30kts. The waves were on our stern quarter, but the boat kept surfing down the waves at up to 13.5kts, turning and then tipping sideways, which in the dark was very scary, especially as the autopilot kept getting overpowered and turning off without warning."
They have sailed halfway around the world, but that account sure does not sound like a safe boat.

Or at least one that was being sailed safely.

this is berthed behind me in Port Moselle I was quite impressed that they have purchased one of Invercargill's finest, considering they are usually very parochial when it comes to government purchasing. Appears to be their dive tender, they have several big boats running around. It has been interesting to see which outboard manufacturer is dominant in the various Pacific Is countries, similar to NZ Yamaha are the big player in Fiji, it is Mercury in Vanuatu and Suzuki in New Cal.

We had a beer and a chat to the chief of that boat back in 99 or 2000 . Apparently it was a bitch to dock because if you wanted to go astern the engine had to be stopped to put it in reverse and restarted . To start the engine it needed compressed air and lots of it which added to the stress by the sounds of it . Pretty sure it was an ocean going salvage tug in its previous life .
