We had a beer and a chat to the chief of that boat back in 99 or 2000 . Apparently it was a bitch to dock because if you wanted to go astern the engine had to be stopped to put it in reverse and restarted . To start the engine it needed compressed air and lots of it which added to the stress by the sounds of it . Pretty sure it was an ocean going salvage tug in its previous life . I see she is owned by the (Australian) Packer family, bit more tech info here www.boatinternational.com/yachts/the-superyacht-directory/arctic-p--52107direct reversing engines are quite common once you get up to that size, particularly in older vessels, other option to a gearbox is a controllable pitch propeller. Can't remember her name, there was a smaller expedition boat/converted tug in Auckland during the AC 2000 skippered by Allan Jouning, watching her squeeze into a tight spot in the viaduct was quite a sight once agian with direct reversing engines.

Something I’m mulling over to get better downwind performance is shifting the rig aft , the Shaw 750 definitely sets a high bar in that department ! . I will be watching the r930 no worries which is having its rig moved significantly aft .

But then they do fall over Ian must be up to a million dollars spent on No Worries by now :-)

That answered one of my big questions, how to size and pitch a prop that can do 68knts.

We have this rather large yacht, name TTHB2, anchored in front of us (off Goldsworthy Bay) tonite. Looks to be 60m+, cannot find any details about her on the web, must be a very private owner
