weight is only 2400kg + trailer, most are alloy. So total be close to 3 tonne. I believe a wheel bearing collapsed but it should of stayed on trailer.Apparently a lot dont have insurance for boat/trailer. Its cheap enough. 16k for $205 pa AMI and thats includes on rd if a mishap happens.
We have encountered om several occasions boats being towed by RAMS or simular and drivers brains are in the ball bags. We tow to Kawakawa bay from Papakura fairly regularly. 80k speed limit rd and pot holes, most travel around 70k but these guys overtake approaching bends etc trying to do 90+.
Well maintained trailer fited with brakes/serviced etc shouldnt be an issue.
Talking to Nephew last night and he didnt realise that he needed to check/grease bearing due to being new trailer .He thought 3 yr wof and needs to do nothing.I brought a new trailer got it home and read the mannual.Check bearing and grease 3 monthly, check axle nuts etc

but it should of stayed on trailer. We see a lot come in and the vast majority use gravity as tie downs. Many also have cockpits full of crap like bikes and biscuits.

It amazes me a trailer can be certified for 3000+kg and yet only have brakes on one axle, wonder how many of those have been subjected to the 30kmh stopping test. I remember as a kid when big tow vehicles were not so common my father towing a heavy tandem Trailite caravan with an XB Falcon 6 over the Kopu Hikuai rd, the van had override brakes on both axles, there is a sharp bend on the eastern side descending and even though the car was in 2nd gear we felt the van almost push the car into a jack knife as the caravan's brakes grabbed!

Don't know the full story but as I have said before a boat like that is too big to tow with utes and converted utes I avoided that by a small margin on Friday. Heading north and 4 cop cars passed at pace with lights and sirens. Thought one was 'what ever', but the second, and third were a bit like 'something is happening' and the forth was 'shit has happened'. I could see the traffic tailing back up ahead so bailed for the exit to Tawa Drive and by the time I got to the exit two patrol cars were parked sideways across the M-Way. Didn't work out what it was till I got home. It is like the Friday before anniversary weekend some shit always happens.

No tie downs on the stern,so boat can move backwards(had that happen ONCE) He was speeding by a witness I know and driving eradict.Trailer got the wobbles on and appears driver over corrected. Not only do I have the safety chain but also a strope from bollard around base of winch post, never trust a towing eye, strope around transom and a bracket taking weight off trim rods, they can and do let go. Its only worth $225k get a new on monday Towed by Ford Everest 3.5t

What gets me with large caravans/boats trailers etc is you are legally allowed to tow up too max of 6 tonne.
But if you are in paid employment or paid/contractual you then must have a class 2 licence, not saying class 2 or better makes a better driver just that you should have a better understanding of weights/movement etc

So ratepayers scrap 30 to 40 a year for about 150k. Out of 100,000 in Auckland apparently.
Registration would be a hard sell says habour master. Too f’ing right.
Meanwhile just walked past a half wrecked van that has been dumped on the side of the road in Putiki bay. Was not there 5/6 weeks ago. “Green” Waiheke people sure love dumping their crap everywhere.

Oh yes, Quality Birdsal. Been on my watch list for a month now. Shocked at the price, should be asking $1/2mil more for such a stunning specimen of a yacht. Sister ship to Charlatan, Built by Neil Gillard while Ray Clarke built Charlatan at the same time, they helped each other out, compared notes etc. Somewhere we have a photo of them pouring the keels. Big pile of wood / branches, a hole in the ground, and electrolux vacuum cleaner working as a blower, and I think a bath tub. Probably in overall better condition cosmetically than Charlatan, and has plenty of fruity bits, walk through transom, stack-pac, cockpit cover etc, but I recon my engine is far better, we've got a new main and a few other things like that. Really need to have a word about the frilly lace curtains though, what an abomination on a boat. These boats go like a train to windward, if anyone is looking for a boat that is an absolute pleasure to sail.

No doubt, but the sad situation is the market for the older Kiwi boats is really declining. I was talking on the weekend to a couple of guys who used to own one of the top S34's and asked if the next generation was picking up the baton for the class and they said sadly no, prices are being dropped big time just to make a sale. Seems to me of those who are in the market for a yacht, the majority can be divided into 2 groups, those who want a stripped out race boat and those whose wives/families want a big arsed AWB floating apartment. The market for old wooden (and for that matter many GRP production boats) Townsons, Lidgards, Wrights, Spencers and many more is very weak, due to their age and their being from another time (basic bach accommodation standard c.f much greater expectations now) . Fogg and I were having this discussion on the weekend, and one of many key requirements for us is headroom, a Townson 32 only has 1.75m max, cannot stand up in them. Then there are the biases against wood construction, insurance issues etc, sadly I can see a real glut in the market in the not too distant future, even contemplating the possible sale of CZ I could see her not being the easiest to move on.
