Hardly a major breach fishing out further than his survey/ticket allowed him.

And none of us have taken any risks or just been a bit blazey at times?? Ancient marieners have talked about rogue waves for yrs,it was not until the 1990s that anyone had actually studied them and most articles support that they come from totally different direction and its not until it appears that you realise whats happening by then too late. Unfortunate mistake that lost lives and we all be wiser once the MNZ enquirey is done until then its all pure speculation and media always dig up the past/dirt never mention about the risks they take or taken to save other lives.

There is nothing in that article that highlights the skipper's style. There was no comment on the skipper's attitude towards safety, or anything similar. There were some comments about his commitment to fishing. It is a classic click bait article. There is no new information. The article is based on an anonymous skipper, who doesn't live in Northland. He knows of the Encounter, and has sailed the Northland Coast before (possibly once, possibly more). The anonymous skipper makes some wild guesses as to what might have happened, and what the Enchanter's skipper may have been planning. If the guy's comments have any authority, why is it anonymous? Crazy Horse (if you remember him) used to be a commercial skipper too. Last I heard of him, he was supposed to be delivering a Trawler from Lyttleton to Nelson. He then deliberately run it onto New Brighton Beach, in surf, in a big NE blow, because his two crew got seasick and for some reason he thought it was a good idea. You may well be reading an article that is quoting Crazy Horse. If the source is anonymous, you have no idea if the source has any idea at all... As for the previous conviction, I don't think that is significant. How many other boats got busted at the same time? Five? Sounds like MNZ weren't doing their job, everyone was doing it, and MNZ had a clamp down. Going out further than your paperwork has no bearing on safety. This might be a shock to some, but pieces of paper don't keep you safe. There are no magic lines in the water or fences all walls to stop you going "out of bounds". We still have no details that would suggest the Skipper has done anything that could be deemed negligent. He had a 30ton 17m boat. We haven't seen the specific forecast for his area, but it sounds like it would be reasonable to expect a boat of that size to handle the conditions forecast at the time he made the decision of when to return. Note that that is not the latest forecast, but probably the forecast 12 hours before he returned. I haven't even seen what the forecasts were for that area, what the observation's were (were they greater than forecast) or even where the event occurred. It sounds like it was South of North Cape (i.e. inshore, technically). I still think trying to hand the Skipper out to dry is unwarranted at this point, and a tad insensitive considering the circumstances.

Also from whakatane but used to run trips out of mangonui , also with an ex WA cray boat

I always wondered what happened to Crazy Horse and why he went off the scene so quickly.

I always wondered what happened to Crazy Horse and why he went off the scene so quickly. It was fully covered in the media, including him giving his name (I think) and that everyone calls him CrazyHorse. Possibly with a photo of him standing infront of the wrecked trawler lieing in the surf on the beach. If I had just screwed up that bad, I wouldn't have given my name, and definitely wouldn't have said 'everyone calls me Fish'... If it wasn't new Brighton Beach, in was one of the ones near Chch but a little further north. The owner of the boat said he was 'speechless'.

Hardly a major breach fishing out further than his survey/ticket allowed him. Agree, a technical foul rather than a real safety one.
Boats get pinged on technical fouls often, it's a easy way for MNZ to say they are worth what they cost us.
Just like all the police revenue traps they then massage into being 'road safety actions' or the current Governments unemployment figures.

Right then. Let's wait...but I bet "leftie" I am very close to the truth when the report comes Out. I've been silenced by the forum Mandate " Trevor's"!... Where do I protest !!! I think there is a bit of a difference between 'being silenced' and not having anyone agree with you. We are discussing a topic, we have differing points of view (hence why we are on a forum). In the past I've worked with people who thought 'being silenced' was having your boots filled with concrete, and then going for an involuntary swim off Canary Wharf. Think we are a wee way from that. On that other forum, 'being silenced' would be not being able to post, i.e. a ban or other sanction amounting to loss of posting rights. Or just blowing up the whole thread, noting that this topic on the other forum is locked. So I think you need to harden up a bit on the 'being silenced' angle. But on the topic of what went wrong, my main point (and a few others if I read it right) simple don't think we have any info or evidence either way to form a judgement. My main point is it is far too early to put the boot into the skipper. If something comes out in one of the four investigations, then you can be first in the que. Four Investigations!?! 1) MNZ 2) TAIC 3) Police on behalf of the Coroner 4) Worksafe How is it that NZ has a productivity problem again?
